Pedro Almodóvar will preside over the jury of the Cannes film Festival Audience.en

An icon "the burning of the Spanish cinema and a director famous all over the world". It is thus that the direction of the Festival de Cannes announced on Tuesday, the choice of Pedro Almodovar to preside over the 70.Th edition of the event, which will take place from 17 to 28 May.

And Pierre Lescure, the chairman, and Thierry Frémux, general delegate of the festival, continued: "Cannes is delighted to welcome a unique artist, who enjoys an immense popularity. His work is already inscribed forever in the history of cinema". And remember "a long faithfulness" that unites Almodovar at the French festival, where it has been part of the jury in 1992, under the presidency of Gérard Depardieu, where it has already premiered six of his films (five of them in competition), but where oddly enough has never won the Palme d’or – despite having already been entitled to an Oscar for best foreign film with All About My Mother (1999), that in Cannes he was “only” the award of achievement.

In the press release that announces the president of the jury, the directorate also quotes the reaction of the director of Juliet to your choose: "I Feel very happy to celebrate the 70.Anniversary in this role so privileged, I show-me recognized and honored, but also with fear. To be president of the jury is a heavy responsibility, and hope to show me the height of the circumstances. I can promise that I will devote myself body and soul to this challenge that is both a pleasure and a privilege."

Pedro Almodovar, author of nearly two dozen feature films since Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Tipas Group (1980) – marks the Festival de Cannes, not referring to his previous film Folle… folle… fólleme Tim! (1978), with Carmen Maura, is one of the presence of the most recurrent in the history of the French festival in the last few decades. It is also often considered to be "the big loser of Cannes, since, despite having been selected for the competitive section by five times, only managed, in addition to the prize, already referred to, for All About My Mother, the premiums for the argument and for the interpretation of the women’s collective formed by Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo and Chus Lampreave, in Back (2006).

his other movies shown at Cannes have been Hugs Broken, The Skin I Live in (2011) and Juliet (2016), in addition to Bad Education (2004), which opened to 60.Th edition of the festival.

return to the press release from Cannes, the festival presents Almodovar – who is the first spaniard to preside over the exhibition – as "the author of a filmography dazzling and iconoclastic, a storyteller virtuoso", addressing topics such as passion, destiny, guilt, and genres such as tragedy, the farce, the vaudeville, fantastic, musical comedy, and the thriller.

In nearly twenty feature films, the director created "a work of incandescent, heiress of the youth punk and contestation, a passion that is insatiable by female characters and in the history of cinema", they also report the directors of the festival, citing the presence of marks of filmmakers such as Douglas Sirk, Georges Franju, Alfred Hitchcock or Luis Bunuel.
