Brian Wright: “we Want the series for the family as good as House Of Cards” – Diário de Notícias – Lisbon

When three brothers are orphaned and given to an evil family, his life is starting to revolve around a dual mission: escape the mansion pair where they live and discover the truth about the death of their parents. A Series of Woes, the adaptation for TV of the books homonyms, Lemony Snicket, arrives today to Netflix. More than one of the big bets of the platform streaming to 2017, the plot is the confirmation of the main goal of the company to create content for the whole family. Brian Wright, vice president of original series for kids and family, explains to the DN why.

Realize, only by the trailer of the first season, that there is nothing as A Series of Woes on TV.

Absolutely, could not agree more. Barry Sonnenfeld, who made the series, is to bring back his vision of the saga Men In Black and the side comic of the movie Games Almost Dangerous. He brought all of his experience to A Series of Misfortunes and I’m looking forward for everyone to see the value of this production. As you said, and with reason, there is nothing on television like this series. The people are going to be surprised. Arriscámos with this project because we believe we can appeal not only to children, as parents. Or even adults who do not have children. Who liked to see the Harry Potter saga, whether it be a child, a parent or an adult without children, you’ll love the series.

unlike The young actors that give life to the brothers in this series, the villain in the project is a well-known name from Hollywood, Neil Patrick Harris. This decision was intentional?

Neil interprets not only does this Count Olaf, who is a character extremely dynamic, as all other roles in which he transforms himself, as a cover. Netflix needed someone that had that versatility, in addition to instincts comic amazing. Because despite Olaf being a villain and bad like everything else, it is entertaining in a way sinister. Neil has all of these requirements. I’m very happy with what I saw of his performance.

in Spite of the somber tone that the series has in terms of graphics, the main message of A Series of Woes is positive. Agree?

Without a doubt. The union between these three brothers, the fact that if they are to remain together and protected constantly is one of the great pillars of the series. As well as the search for the truth about what happened to their parents. The great mystery is that through the first season and, who knows, a second or even more groups of episodes.

How “faithful” is the television version of the popular saga literary launched by Lemony Snicket between 1999 and 2006?

We’re very faithful to the books, and it was Daniel [Handler, true name of Lemony Snicket] who wrote most of the argument of the series. In addition, the director Barry Sonnenfeld said that this set of books is their preferred ever and strove to keep the mood and tone of the work. As is obvious, any adaptation requires some adjustments, but I think that we have done in an excellent way. The series does not delete anything from the books, it only adds something.

This is, unapologetically, a series addressed to the whole family. This is a target audience for the business and the growth of Netflix in 2017?

it Is a priority for us, because we know that families love to watch entertainment together, love to talk about what they saw on TV and love the closeness and unity that it brings to you. That being said, if Netflix be able to be the home of series that families love to watch together, this will be a great victory for the company. If we look at the landscape of television, there are many series made for adults, and many other directed at children. But there are not many places where if you produce good series that will appeal to all. It makes me proud that Netflix is doing this. I think that this bet will differentiate us from the competition and bring in new subscribers.

What other content is directed to family consumption are to be prepared?

This week we began the production of Lost In Space, which will bring back the much-cherished series of the 1960s and an amazing story about family and survival. As it is a big production, just will debut in early 2018. This year we will have the third season of Fuller House and the second Stranger Things, which won a huge amount of fans both adults and children. We will also have in 2017 a series that I would like to emphasize, 13 Reasons, directed at adolescents, young adults and parents.

And that has as a director Thomas McCarthy, who was nominated last year for an Oscar by the film Spotlight.

Correct. Is a series a little more mature and based on the saga literary published about 10 years ago. It is a mystery around the secret that led to a 16-year-old killing. At the same time, a box of 13 tapes is left at the door of the house of someone who attends their school. Each of these cassettes tells the stories of 13 people who contributed to it to take this tragic decision. It is an important project for Netflix and the fact of being held by Thomas McCarthy raises it even more. Is a series very beautiful.

when Many people think of the name Netflix, which come together in mostly the dramas critically-acclaimed and award-winning House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. This bet in the series target the entire family will bring to Netflix a diversity of content that might already be need?

I Think yes. And you’re right, most of the people remember these two series of when you think of us. And we love this. But my answer is simple. We want to series to the family as good as House of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. That is our goal. And, to be honest, we have already started to do in 2016, with Stranger Things.

Which was, moreover, one of the biggest phenomena of popularity on television, in the year that has just ended.

Stranger Things proved to be extremely popular. People love-in. Even being perhaps a little frightening, this is an original of ours that will appeal to people of all ages. I think that is a product well done, and we have been nominated for many awards, two of them including the Golden Globes that took place recently. It is proof that, when creating good stories, they can be as highly acclaimed as that of the considered as major televised drama.
