The future of the Berardo Museum? “Ask the minister” – the Observer

The protocol for the transfer of the Berardo Collection to the State ends on 31 December and the contract is delayed, which prompted the artistic director of the museum, Pedro Lapa, to criticize the minister of Culture, Luís Filipe Castro Mendes. "The issue should already be resolved for a long time, is not we are in October and still thinking about it," said Pedro Lapa on Tuesday morning, during a guided tour for journalists in the two new exhibition at the Berardo Museum.

Asked about how to run the negotiations for the renewal of the protocol, Pedro Lapa replied: "Have to ask the minister, I think that the subject is the same in the office of the minister. Calculation, and I hope that this is resolved as soon as possible."

To the casual Observer, the office of the minister of Culture has already indicated this afternoon that "the negotiations are proceeding with great calm and without surprises". The minister Castro Mendes will still examine the claims, according to spokeswoman Teresa Bizarre.

Date of 2006, the giving in to CCB, on the basis of lending, a part of the art collection of the businessman madeiran Joe Berardo.

After months of controversy about whether the works would be in Portugal or would be transferred to an institution outside of the country, Berardo, and the then minister of Culture Isabel Pires de Lima signed a protocol, which led to the creation of the Foundation of Modern and Contemporary Art Berardo Collection. The then prime minister José Socrates personally accompanied the negotiations.

The protocol, the second said Pedro Lapa on Thursday, predicted that the collection would be being expanded every year, with new works of modern and contemporary art, through two funds with a value equal to: 500 thousand euros per year from the ministry of Culture and 500 thousand euros from Fundação Berardo.

This collection would now call State-Berardo and could, at the end of the agreement, be sold to a third party or acquired in full by one of the parties, explained the same. "At the end of two years, the collector and the government gave up the idea of this collection", said the artistic director. There were no further acquisitions in addition to the 214 that were made in 2007 and 2008 and they joined the 864 pieces that Berardo gave the date of the signing of the protocol.

one More time, questioned about why you have been suspended the purchase of new works, Pedro Lapa replied: "Have to ask the minister. I suppose this subject is annexed to the protocol that is to be renegotiated." Pedro Lapa was also the fact that, until now, have not been named by the ministry of Culture to any meeting. "I am a technician, I’m not a politician, but there are technical issues related to the protocol, he said.

The artistic director led several journalists to the exhibition "Visuality & Vision, Portuguese Art in the Berardo Collection II" and "Fernando Lemos: a Collective Portrait, in Portugal, at the End of the 40′s", both with opening scheduled for Wednesday, the 26th, and closing on 31 December. He took the opportunity to praise the role of the Berardo Museum, considering it "the great museum in Lisbon of modern and contemporary art".

"it Is a concrete reality, is the great museum in that any citizen can see everything that happened in art throughout the century, XX. There is another museum with the mission of providing a perspective on national, that is the Chiado Museum," said Pedro Lapa, who leads the Berardo since 2011, the year that closed a route of 13 years as director of the Museum of Chiado.

The hypothesis of the Berardo Museum does not open doors in January "would be a profound recklessness", according to Pedro Lapa, not if places. "The protocol will occur, it is premature to make other judgments," he said.

The lack of renewal of the agreement implies an uncertain future in terms of the programming of the museum. "Obviously, I don’t have perspective to projects in 2017", complained the same. "We don’t have programming, it is a new situation, at this time of year I always have something thought out for the following year."
