Lisbon wants to be the first city without food waste and is in need of volunteers – Public.en



The municipality of Lisbon wants to be the first city where do not waste food, and today unveiled a national campaign against food waste, with the aim of gathering volunteers and raising awareness in the civil society.

The campaign “Goes where plenty of leads where it is needed” will be launched at the national level from Saturday, on the eve of World Food Day, in multiple media.

The objective, according to the local authority, is to increase the number of volunteers and to ensure coverage for the entire territory of the municipality, through its network of collection and distribution of food, and at the same time raise the awareness of families to good food practices and the fight against waste.

To be a volunteer just go to one of the institutions with collaborative or to the authority itself, which already has a network of volunteers organized.

On the initiative to participate in six public figures – the fado singer Ana Moura, the actress and presenter Claudia Vieira, footballer Eder, the presenter Júlio Isidro, the actor Lourenço Ortigão and the maestro Vitorino de Almeida.

“we Hope that the increase in the number of volunteers achieved with this campaign will contribute, decisively, to which the Lisbon is the first city in the world to combat food waste in a consistent and integrated at the city level”, considered the city commissioner to Combat Food Waste, the councillor João Gonçalves Pereira.

To prove the importance of the project, this presentation was attended by the president of the Chamber, Fernando Medina, council members, representatives of the Government, of the Holy House of Mercy of Lisbon, the Food Safety Authority and Economic (ASAE) and two dozen institutions and agencies of the city who work against food waste, such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Salvation Army, Community Life and Peace, Reefod, the Food Bank and the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO).

the president of The Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was not present, but patronizes the project and has sent a message of support, as well as the prime minister, António Costa, the imam of the mosque of Lisbon, ‘sheik David Munir, and the cardinal patriarch Manuel Clemente.

As pointed out by Fernando Medina, the Food web of Lisbon has enabled the reuse of more than two million free meals to about two thousand families in the city of Lisbon.

the Assembly of The Republic has declared 2016 as the National Year of Fighting Food Waste.
On Sunday, October 16, marks World Food Day.
