Lisbon Book Fair starts today – TVI24

The 85th Book Fair of Lisbon , located in Eduardo VII park, starts Thursday and runs until May 14. They will therefore be 15 days of an event marking the late spring in the Portuguese capital. The organization expects to receive 600,000 visitors.

The opening ceremony at 16:00 in Piazza Yellow has the presence of the Secretary of State for Culture, Jorge Barreto Xavier, the Mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, the councilor of Culture, Catarina Vaz Pinto, and the president of the Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers (APEL), John Alvim.


The “Camping with stories” initiative is one. It is a partnership with the Municipal Libraries and which is expected the participation of 120 children between eight and 12, who will spend a night in the Cold Greenhouse, including books and short stories.

Also new is a space dedicated to gastronomy with the installation of a kitchen which will host several cooking demonstrations.

At the fair, are expected to attend the president of the Federation of European Publishers, Pierre Dutilleul, who speaks today about copyright and piracy at a conference scheduled for 18:00, which will also count with the participation of the Secretary of State for Culture, Jorge Barreto Xavier, and John Alvim.

Other presences highlighted by APEL are the co-president of the European Federation and the International Booksellers, Kyra Dreher, taking part in a session on the law of fixed book prices, and the president of the International Publishers Association, Richard Charkin, who will speak on the international constraints of copyright and the fight against piracy.

As part of the event will be held the first meeting Literary “We and the books” and the Foundation Manuel Francisco dos Santos will promote a cycle of 11 debates on the Portuguese economy, parliament and teaching, among other topics.

The Fair is open until June 14, and has diverse activities, including book presentations, autograph sessions and debates.
