Journalism that changes lives – Daily News – Lisbon

Michael Rezendes is one of the journalists who inspired The Case Spotlight, a favorite of the Oscars this year, released this week. The reporter for The Boston Globe, Azorean grandson of São Miguel, helped to expose decades of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.

Mike is lusodescendente.. The paternal grandparents were from San Miguel, but the man was born and raised in Boston and barely scratches the Portuguese language. Incidentally, majored in English at Boston University and was about to begin collaborating on small regional publications entered the world of large newspapers. It started in East Boston Community News, written in Spanish and English and published between 1970 and 1989. In between, he collaborated with magazines Boston and The Boston Phoenix, dedicated to culture and entertainment. In the 1990s passed by California San Jose Mercury News and The Washington Post and that’s when it became clear as a writer in the political area. When The Boston Globe hired at the turn of the millennium, Rezendes was integrated into the team of great research, called Spotlight, which still remains.

There were four journalists and four had been challenged by the new director newspaper, Martin Baron, to investigate a report that the newspaper had given: that there were suspicions of sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston of the Catholic Church. In early 2002 they had managed to prove that the Church had covered up the crimes five priests accused of sexual abuse of minors over 30 years. These first reports led to many other victims came forward, which resulted in the termination of 250 clerics and the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law, for trying to hide the crimes.

Rezendes received, with the rest Spotlight team, the Pulitzer for Public Service in 2003, plus a number of other journalism awards. He wrote two books about the case and continued his career as an investigative journalist.
