Private art collection of David Bowie sold 36.5 M€ in two days of auction – SIC Notícias

The auction, held over two days and concluded on the afternoon of Friday, included 356 works of art that belonged to David Bowie.

The work more expensive — “Air Power” — the framework of the north american artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, was sold for 7.1 million pounds (8.1 million euros) on Thursday.

Bowie bought this painting, which shows the faces aggressive on a background in intense red and different shades of brown, a year after star in the film “Basquiat” (1996), in which he played the artist of the ‘pop art’ Andy Warhol.

The frame of Basquiat — that he died of ‘overdose’ in 1988, at age 27 — was one of the 47 objects of art from the collection of David Bowie auctioned off on Thursday by auction international Sotheby s. most of The items auctioned on Thursday were modern art works of british authors, sold for a total of 24.3 million pounds (27.9 million euros).

In the auction of two days, another painting of Basquiat – “Untitle” – have reached the double of the estimated value, being sold for 2.3 million pounds (2.7 million euros).

Other work highlighted was “Head of Gerda Boehm,” a portrait of the british Frank Auerbach, sold for 3.7 million pounds (4.3 million euros).

Also, were cast off “Witmess” and “Trevalgan” of Peter Lanyon, for 797.000 pounds (907.863 euros) and 305.000 pounds (347.426 euros), respectively.

Among the sculptures of the collection auctioned stands out “Family Group”, a work by Henry Moore, which was auctioned by 581.000 pounds (661.817 euros) and “Large Idol,” the artist’s scottish William Turnbull, and sold for 317.000 lbs (361.095 euros).

Prior to bidding, the works were exhibited for ten days at Sotheby’s in London, under the name “Bowie Collector”.

As part of this exhibition, the 04 of November, the gallery was open all night for conferences, guided tours of the collection and display of a documentary.

A small part of the collection of the musician — about 30 pieces — had already been displayed in July and August in London, in Los Angeles and New York in September, and in Hong Kong in October.

During his long career, David Bowie has shown a great interest in art, which conveyed to the public through music, videos, make-up, among others, and also through painting and drawings, which came to view in various galleries during the 90′s.

David Bowie, he died on January 10, in New York city, a victim of cancer, two days after releasing its last album, “Blackstar”, recorded when he was already sick.
