Died legendary singer Leonard Cohen – Jornal de Negócios – Portugal

The singer, canadian 82 years old, had recently released his 14th album “You Want It “Darker”, in which reflected on his own mortality, and with his serious voice, he wondered about the nature of man, and of an all-powerful God.


Born September 21, 1934 to a jewish family in Montreal (Canada), Leonard Cohen wrote some of the songs most emblematic of the past few decades.

Even in Canada he obtained a degree in literature at McGill University, in 1955, and he joined the musical group, The Buckskin Boys.

he Moved to New York city with a scholarship to Columbia Graduate School, and at age 24 he received another, from the Canada Council to write a book, which allowed him to travel to Europe.

Cohen has always kept the music with literature, his great passion, which began at the age of 16 years, when he wrote his first poems.

Published the first album, “Songs of Leonard Cohen” in 1967, after thirty years, and have revealed the aspect of the literary, in particular with the book of poetry “Let us compare mythologies” (1956) and the novel “The favourite Game”, (1963), published in Portugal in 2010.

Leonard Cohen is also the author of the poetry book “Flowers for Hitler” (1964).

In Portugal are also published “Children of the Snow” and “The book of desire’, which brings together poems scattered writings over the last twenty years, some of which during a buddhist retreat Cohen in the United States and in India.

Some of the poems in this book have been adapted for the lyrics of songs.

Considered one of the most important names in popular music of the TWENTIETH century, Cohen wrote songs symbolic of his generation, including “Hallelujah.”

“Suzanne” or “So Long Marianne” illustrate, in 1967, a first collection of songs marked by suffering love.

at The age of 77 years, was awarded with the Prize Prince of Asturias of the Letters by the “imaginary sentimental” writing, and music, justified the jury.

In the same year, in 2011, was awarded with the 9.Th Prize Glenn Gould, is awarded every two years to artists who contribute to enrich the human condition and representing the values of innovation, inspiration and transformation.

Despite the age, was the most active since 2008, when he started a new international tour, after an absence of 15 years, and has edited the album “Old Ideas” (2012).

In 2014 released the album “Popular Problems”, which addresses the concerns and dilemmas of the current world.

Cohen was preceded in death, in July, by Marianne Ihlen, the Norwegian who lived on the Greek island of Hydra, and that it has inspired “So Long, Marianne”.

in A letter to Ihlen, revealed by a friend, Cohen declared his “love without end” by it, writing: “I think I’m going to follow you very soon.”
