Artists Celebrate Music City title received by Salvador – Correio da Bahia

From axé and samba-reggae, MPB and the pagoda, the arrocha and rock. The recognition was awarded by UNESCO (UNESCO) and makes the capital of Bahia the first Brazilian city to win the title. The honor was celebrated by the artists.

The recognition was granted six months after the City Hall launch the application for the title. With the appointment, the city becomes part of the Creative Cities Network of UNESCO in the musical context.

The network consists of seven themed areas, which include crafts, folk arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music. Besides Salvador, 18 other cities hold the title of Music City, like Seville (Spain), Kingston (Jamaica) and Liverpool (UK).

According to Jorge Khoury, the Office Salvador Global City manager responsible for the project, the recognition has, in addition to cultural, social and economic relevance. “The title makes room for us to have an even greater international projection. In addition to exchanges with other musical cities, Salvador will create new projects for the art, such as the construction of the Music Museum , scheduled for delivery in 2017, according to Khoury (see sidebar).

Latin America
Salvador is the second city in Latin America to receive the title, being named after Bogota, Colombia. As the capital of Bahia, Brasilia has also launched candidacy, but it was not contemplated. Besides Salvador, Santos (SP) was recognized as a City of Film and Belém (PA) was named Gastronomy City, this new batch of titles.

The news was celebrated by Mayor ACM Neto, who dedicated the title to the Bahia musicians and instrumentalists. “Singers, instrumentalists, composers and everyone involved with the music deserve this title because they lead our history and culture to the world,” he said.
