Orchestra and Gulbenkian Choir debut work inspired by the “Book of Disquiet” – RTP

The piece, entitled “The street of Douradores – litany of despair,” is interpreted by the Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Choir, under the direction of Joana Carneiro.

The premiere of this work in Portugal is the first under the “partnership between the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Symphony Orchestra of the State of São Paulo, which provides alternating premiere of commissioned works for Portuguese and Brazilian composers,” according to Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

In a statement issued by the institution, the Brazilian composer refers to the “Book of Disquiet” as “the soliloquy of Fernando Pessoa, incomparably denser in pain and beauty.” “I was imprisoned by the gentle and cruel seduction of that told me those pages,” says the composer, who recently celebrated 73 years.

The world premiere of this work took place on the 30th of April, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The concert program at the Gulbenkian – which will resume on Friday at the Grand Auditorium – which has as soloist soprano Dora Rodrigues, also includes “Danzón No. 2″ by Arturo Márquez, the aria Bachiana Brazilian n.º5 , Heitor Villa-Lobos, “Symphonic Dances” from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein, and “Boléro” by Maurice Ravel.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Symphony Orchestra of the State of São Paulo established in 2014, the partnership for alternating premiere of works by Portuguese and Brazilian composers, in both countries.

The project will continue in 2016, with the premiere of a work by Portuguese composer Luis Tinoco, in Lisbon, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, succeeding later the Brazilian premiere, the Symphony Orchestra of the State of São Paulo.
