Sacred Art Museum of Santarém wins national award – Regional Network

The Sacred Art Museum project Santarém won the eighth edition of the Prize Vasco Vilalva, worth 50,000 euros, awarded annually by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

The reasons for the decision, the jury emphasized the importance of this new museum for the cultural promotion of the region, highlighting at the same time, the jury set of recovery and conservation works in the cathedral, carried out under this project.

The Museum project Art Sacra had the overall coordination of the architect Pedro Resende Lion and is part of the Route of the Cathedrals, an initiative involving the Diocese of Santarém, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the city of Santarém.

The Museum of Sacred Art has three rooms for permanent and temporary exhibitions, and a reservation of room. The collection of works of art resulted from a survey of the artistic heritage developed since 2006 by the Diocesan Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.

In a statement, the director of the Museum Diocesan, Father Joaquim Ganhão, expressed great satisfaction for the distinction, hoping that the museum is “a vehicle of inspiration and source of hope for the recovery of the Portuguese cultural heritage.”
