Interview EF Roni Nunes, Festin 2015 programmer – Spreads Facts

The 6th edition of Festin – Travelling Film Festival of the Portuguese language started with the right foot on the 8th and promises to continue to celebrate the Portuguese-speaking world in the Movies St. George until next Wednesday the 15th, with many films and major initiatives.

Spreads Facts had the opportunity to ask some questions to Roni Nunes , one of the programmers and a member of the festival organizers, who spoke of Festin , the main sites of interest of this new edition and other aspects of the event in an interview that you can read below

Spreads Facts : The diversity of films is increasingly visible, with programming being composed of tapes from all corners of the Portuguese-speaking world. The purpose of celebrating the culture of the Portuguese language has been fully achieved or is there still some way to go

Roni Nunes : There will always be a very hard way to go . As we know, suffered a massive influence of American culture industry and, in the case of cinema in the Western world, only the French can, with great difficulty, some resistance to that domain. Then there is a more serious issue: the Portuguese cinema remains very poorly regarded in his own country and the Brazilian, despite all the diversity and greater recognition within their borders, also with difficulty, has been able to achieve in the last years in Portugal is largely ignored.

But the African cinema trips, sometimes in their own production difficulties. So a rooted event in Lusophone concept is fundamental and continuous growth that Festin has experienced since its inception shows that there is sufficient space and interest to continue to invest in its future

EF :. Currently the world is moving so quickly that we forget our roots, our history and our culture. How can the Festin be an important tool for us to reconnect and reminisce of our identity as citizens of the Portuguese language

NB ? This bombardment of popular fiction in English comes from decades and, without going into the merits of the works themselves, the fact is that it does not help us anything, while Portuguese-speaking countries, to know and value ourselves. Of course, the question of identity nothing to do with nationalism in the negative sense of the term, but simply as a matter of self-knowledge. No this is completely impossible for a society evolve in whatever direction is.

EF : Nearly reach the middle of the 6th edition which feedback ? previous years

NB : The Festin started with a very small event, with very few films and very little disclosure. The distance of this first edition and the last year, for example, is huge. In 2014 the program was very good, the acceptance of substantial public and the disclosure that was achieved was considerable. Despite the little support, which implies a huge effort to achieve it, the Festin has become a large and complex structure. From what we’ve see so far, this year we believe an even greater advance

EF . Among the many films of various sections, which those who consider captive and able to attract even more public

NB : fiction movies are always the most attractive to the public, although the Documentary Marathon , established two years ago, it has proved a winning bet. Last year was filled sessions for several of these sessions. In the universe of fiction we tried a great balance between gender and auteur cinema, between accessible films and others that require quite the spectator. For the latter, one of the most interesting is the The River in belongs , which brings a great actress, Leandra Leal , to invest more time, as a performer and co-producer, the film arthouse .

In the genera Shows Globe brings, for example, popular comedies such as SOS Women at Sea and Crazy to Marry . Then there are police, as German and Chess Game , suspense and terror, with When I Was Alive and high dramas, such as A Violent Dose of Anything , Between Us , Apnea , A French Film and The Farewell . The shows children’s this year is very strong, with four feature films dedicated children plus a short session. I consider it essential to familiarize the little ones to enjoy the audiovisual production in Portuguese that today and taking up the issue of spectacle and big budget, is as good as the US.

EF The festival’s program is very rich, but continues to be noted a “domain” of Brazilian and Portuguese films in the main sections. There are plans to introduce more works from other countries in future editions

NB : Yes, of course. Indeed African cinema has had years with a stronger presence in the Festin , as was the case in 2014. This year we had less Feature film fiction fault of their own : there were two Angolan movies and a Mozambican that even with the extended time, we were not sent. Anyway, we are already thinking of new ideas to solve the problem arising because of the continent’s productions are very small and in the case of East Timor, nonexistent.

EF : This 6th edition brings many surprises and novelties. ? Is there still room for new initiatives, projects and ways to further develop the project

NB : There is room for a lot! The possibilities of diversification of an event in Portuguese are endless, especially if we continue to observe in practice what we believe, namely that there is public interest for something of this nature. Personally I intend to take discussion in the team several projects for the year to be improved and have analyzed its viability. There are always ways to improve, to be creative and bold

EF :. To end: beyond what has already been officially announced by the festival, which is the public will still find surprising in the Festin 2015

NB . In general the Festin has a fantastic atmosphere, something that is reflected, for example, the spontaneous arrival of many participants of the films to the festival. This, in itself, through symbiosis with the public going to St. George, creates a very strong and lively film experience.

But even within the entire programming Festin I would point out, by relevance, the debate Digital Culture and Audiovisual Alternative Consumption: Opportunities and Challenges for the Cinema in Portuguese , which will take place on day 14. This topic is very interesting because it discusses the changes and the future of cinema in the universe after the internet explosion. This touches on the question, for example, piracy and attendance at movie theaters, but also by the possibilities that new technologies offer film producers outside the major centers -. Especially in distribution
