Meeting with international guests, an auditorium “with a kitchen” – for there are held presentations of gastronomy books – and several nights dedicated to children with a new activity, Camping with stories , are some of the innovations of the 85th edition of the Book Fair, which runs from May 28 to June 14 at the Eduardo VII Park in Lisbon.
This edition has a total of 271 pavilions (21 more than last year) and with a record number of participants:. 123 are enrolled in this book fair (23 more than in 2014)
At the press conference held Tuesday afternoon at the Parque Eduardo VII, which already can be seen mounted the colorful pavilions of different publishers, the president of the Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers (APEL) John Alvim, said that in 2014 the number of visitors of the Book Fair of Lisbon was 532,000 and that the expectation of APEL “is always to surpass” the number of last year’s visitors. “We aim [this year] reaching 600,000 visitors, with the [new] leisure facilities, programming and if weather conditions are favorable, “he added.
On the other hand, Bruno Pacheco, secretary general of the APEL, recalled that This year visitors can look forward to “a thousand initiatives during the 18 days of the fair, about 100 more than last year.” There will be more local restoration and the new space “ cooking show” – with an auditorium located at the entrance of the fair by the Marquis de loft where there will be “a kitchen” – let there arise presentations of food and cooking books.
Among the most exciting innovations this year at the fair included the initiative Happy Nights Readers: Camping with Stories but for which have already completed enrollment. It is dedicated to the smallest, from 8 to 12, and participants will spend an evening “surrounded by books, stories and letters” as explained Susana Silvestre, network Lisbon Municipal Libraries. This activity is repeated in six nights – 19:30 May 5, 6, 12 and 13 June – will allow 120 children who have been selected after registration and payment at the site of APEL, make a guided tour of the fair among many books and activities, have dinner and encamp at night in the Cold Greenhouse Lisbon.
Soon after the opening ceremony of the 85th edition of the Book Fair of Lisbon Thursday at 16h, begins the first of three conference cycles on Thursdays with international guests devoted to discussion of issues related to European book industry. The first lecture is on copyright / piracy and will be attended by the President of the European Federation of Editors, Pierre Dutilleul, on 28 May.
The second conference will be devoted to the Fixed Price Law and will be attended by Kyra Dreher, co-president of the European Federation and the International Booksellers (June 4) and finally, Richard Charkin, president of the International Publishers Association will be at the fair on June 11 to discuss the international constraints the rights of author and the fight against piracy. During the 18 days of the fair will also take place the I Literary Meeting We and book s, and Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation will promote a cycle of eleven debates on the Portuguese economy, parliament and teaching , among others.
The Book Fair of Lisbon is open Monday to Thursday from 12h30 to 23h, on Fridays and eve of public holidays from 12h30 to 24h, Saturday from 11h to 24h and on Sundays and holidays from 11am to 23h.
