In Portugal all started in Vilar de Moors – for the summer festivals, understand themselves. After the first edition in which the rock was the main character and where the poster also had foreign bands in 1971, they called it, appropriately “Portuguese Woodstock.” Two years after the historic American festival, the Estado Novo Portugal via a village of Alto Minho fill up with a generation that free behaviors, uninhibited as the fusty current and united morality around the music, presaged the inevitable end of the dictatorship .

Vilar de Moors booked their place in history that in 1971, the year the headliners Elton John and Manfred Mann were followed by Portuguese Quarteto 1111, Pop Five Music Incorporated, Objective, psycho or Union. Added to it a new (historical) chapter in 1982 and the diversity and timeliness of that poster can be seen at a distance of three decades, as a good metaphor for the country but had won the right to freedom of choice of democracy. Passed by there U2 still far from stardom, post-punk of A Certain Ratio, the avant-garde pop of GNR, the cosmic jazz of Sun Ra Arkestra, the fiddle of the Cape Verdean travadinha or neo-psychedelia of Echo & amp; The Bunnymen. 34 years after the latter returned returning to Vilar de Moors. Begins this Thursday and until Saturday, will be back to regain the luster of yesteryear.

After 1982, the festival returned in 1996 and since that date and until the middle of the next decade, had the its prominent place in the burgeoning Portuguese circuit of festivals. 2006 marked the beginning of new interregnum interrupted timidly in 2014, an issue that will not be for history. This year promises to be a return to serious, which is more consistent (the protocol signed by the Municipality of Caminha March provides for the festival this year and the next five years), and a sign that combine veteran names they appeal to the historical memory of his second life in the 1980s (Peter Murphy, Peter Hook, the Waterboys, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), and musicians and established bands in the Portuguese music scene (Legendary Tigerman, Antonio Zambujo, David Fonseca, Linda Martini). The setting will be the usual: the bridge over the river Coura through which we enter the room, the flat and grassed area in whose eastern end stands the main stage, and the perfect frame created by the hills and trees around.

the start of the festivities will, in turn, a bridge between the beginnings of Vilar de Moors and its present existence. 18h Thursday, the Caminha County Cancioneiro inaugurates the Vilar de Moors in 2016 – remember that the festival was born in 1965 on the initiative of doctor Antonio Barge and that, until 1971, was dedicated to traditional and classical music. After Cancioneiro with Manuel Fury and The Castaways, who edited recently 20,000 Naves , the second single of the new album in preparation, Vilar de Moors will start definitely.

on that day, three heroes of the 1980s, Peter Hook & amp; The Light, the band’s former bassist of Joy Division (20h), Happy Mondays (22:45) and Peter Murphy (0h30), alternate with the rock’n’roll Legendary Tigerman (21h20) and the bossa-fated of songs Antonio Zambujo terminating the night from 2:05 a.m.. Friday, two more veteran bands that have left mark in the 1980s, the Echo & amp; The Bunnyman Ocean Rain (22h35), and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark which gave good name to synth pop (1:50 a.m.) appear on the poster next to Linda Martini (20h), David Fonseca (0h15) of Neev, Portuguese musician in the path of Bon Iver and James Blake (19h), and cross-pop with reggae and electronic German Milky Chance (21.10). The festival ends on Saturday with Samuel Úria (19h), the Niger desert blues Bombino (20h), Tiago Bettencourt (21h20), the Waterboys Mike Scott (22h45), the Tindersticks (0h30) and the Mechanism Blasted (2h) .

daily tickets for the festival cost 25 € and general passes € 50. The camping, of course, is free for ticket holders. Free is also access to the stage set up near the south entrance of the festival, where you can watch the movie sessions. The schedule is a surprise: will be announced daily on the screen where the films will be shown. Inside the room, the restaurant area will include an area gourmet where gastronomy of the Alto Minho is recreated by several chefs Portuguese.
