Smoking in movies may turn out to be “adult film” – TSF Online

The World Health Organization (WHO) wants all member countries to use a certification system that ranks movies and series television as “adult” always that include scenes with people smoking.

This WHO recommendation contained in a report which is presented today on the influence that the presence of smoking in movies and television series carries on the decision of young people taking up smoking.

The WHO believes that reducing the visual display to the presence of smoking can delay the onset of this addiction, as well as the diseases associated with it.

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control in the United States, six million teens started smoking in 2014 after being exposed to scenes where they appear smokers and, of these, two million will die from related diseases tobacco consumption.

In 2014, scenes with smoking were detected in 44% of all films produced by Hollywood, and 36% of all films rated for youth. In this sense the US Surgeon General (the US Health General Directorate) made a report which argues that rating for adult movies with smoking would reduce by 20% the number of new young smokers.
