There is a new record the work of Paulo Rego. The painting ‘The Cadet and his Sister’ (‘The cadet and sister’), an acrylic on paper on canvas 1988, was at auction in London and eventually sold for 1.6 million euros.

The work, which addresses the issue of dismissal (a cadet, in the uniform of the Military College, says goodbye to his sister, kneeling to tie your shoes before going to fight), refers to the death of her husband, Victor Willing.

That same year 1988, Victor Willing, also an artist, died of multiple sclerosis. A fact of personal life which coincided with a professional milestone because it was also in 1988 that Paula Rego is now represented by the Marlborough Fine Art Gallery and awarded a large retrospective of his work by the Serpentine Gallery, both in London.

At the auction, held in the English capital, ‘The Cadet and his Sister’, which was owned by an American private collector, filed the initial estimate of a sale between 846,000 euros and 1,130 million euros.

But, said a source from Sotheby’s auction house, quoted unidentified by Lusa, the picture was eventually sold for 1,614,795 euros, a new record for the works of Paula Rego.

‘Looking Out’ (1997), by the same artist, he was also the auction. This pastel on paper on aluminum support came with an estimate between 707,000 euros and 989,000 euros and sold for a final bid of 1,360,941 euros.

The display is part of a series of works of the painter inspired by the book “The Crime of Father Amaro ‘by Eca de Queiroz. It is an emblematic picture from all the Paula Rego’s work denouncing the condition of women, portraying Amelia leaning on the window of a house, alone, giving a picture of frustration and imprisonment, while waiting for the day of delivery.

In the same Contemporary Art Auction, sponsored by Sotheby’s since yesterday and until tomorrow, are on sale works of Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud and David Hockney

‘ One Dollar Bill (Silver Certificate) ‘, painted by Andy Warhol in 1962, sold for 29.4 million euros, the highest sales figure ever for a contemporary work at auction in London.

The work, a reproduction of a note to the US dollar, stands out as the only painted by the artist known for his Pop Art works and had an estimate of between 18.4 million and EUR 25.4 million .

Another record for a work on paper was set by ‘Head of Gerda Bohm’ (1961), a portrait of the British Frank Auerbach painted cousin Gerda, and that triggered an estimate of between 353,000 and 495,000 euros for a final price of 3.1 million euros.

On the first day, the auction yielded more than 130 million pounds, or more than EUR 183 million.
