The artist Danae Stratou, former minister’s wife of Finance of Greece Yanis Varoufakis, urged yesterday in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Europe to unite and rise up against austerity. “We planted the seed for something to change. I hope the rest of you in Europe, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France and Italy to come forward so that we can make the change together, because I think that’s what people want.”
And if a month ago, when the coming of Danae Stratou the Cerveira Biennial, the theme troika and the EU was taboo, this time, during the inauguration of the event, the artist did not mince words to the current crisis in Greece. And on the very day that the new Greek government ministers were sworn in at a ceremony at the presidential palace, after the Greek prime minister, Alex Tsipras, announced last Friday a remodel. With the spotlight focused on her, a woman Varoufakis said he hoped this government “serve the people and their will, and to do a good job.” More, he added, “if they do what the people need, it will be fantastic.”
As for Yanis Varoufakis, Danae has no doubt that “it is obvious what he thinks” about this post-referendum situation to the Greek people. “We all want a better Europe. We all want change and do not want austerity. It’s what the people want, that’s what he [her husband] want and what we all want.” More reiterated, “what he wants is to be a Europe that can be democratic, that respects the vote of the people and democracy.”
