Museums, palaces and national monuments received about 1.8 million visitors in the first half of 2015, an increase of 10% compared to the same period 2014, according to official statistics released today.
According to data from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (DGPC), the 23 cultural spaces under their authority received a total of 1.851 million visitors in the first half of 2015 and the same period in 2014 were 1,681 .036.
For groups, the monuments registered the highest increase, 15.7%, to 1,087,372 visitors, followed by the palaces, an increase of 12.4% to 183,381, and museums, with over 0.3% to 580,050.
The most significant increases in entries are revealed, according to the published tables have proved at the National Museum of Ethnology in Lisbon (42, 6%), the National Museum Machado de Castro, in Coimbra (39.4%), the Convent of Christ in Tomar (25.9%) and the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon (19.8%).
Overall, the spaces which saw more entries in the first half of 2015 were the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos (441,345), the Torre de Belém (285 815), both in Lisbon, followed by the National Palace of Mafra (152,068) the Monastery of Batalha (135,176) and the National Coach Museum in Lisbon (120 348).
With regard to the most significant declines, the National Museum of Ancient Art leads, with -43.7%, followed -if the National Theatre Museum, with -12.1%, and the Folk Art Museum, with -10.3%, all in Lisbon.
As for the variation of domestic and foreign visitors, there was foreign entries increases in the monuments, museums and palaces.
The Portuguese also visited over the monuments and palaces, but decreased the entries in museums.
