Raduan Nassar, the writer who prefers the “archaic” agriculture – Journal News

Author reference for many Brazilians, especially the book “Left of the Father,” Raduan Nassar was born in 1935 in São Paulo, is the son of Lebanese, studied law and philosophy, but it was literature that made him famous.

from today with Camões Prize, whose jury justified the choice, with its promotion of political and social awareness, against authoritarianism, Nassar published the first book, the novel “Left of the Father” in 1975 and three years later, the novel “a cholera glass.” The two works would later be adapted to the cinema. In 1997 published a collection of short stories, “Girl on the way.”

Today, with 80 years, the last removed and practically without giving interviews, the author’s work is short, but the editions and translations, especially of “Left of the Father” and “a cholera glass,” do not stop growing.

According to the Brazilian press, the year I turned 80, in 2015, Raduan hung up the phone not to be pestered and to stay quiet, as it was the last three decades, having gone back to writing any other novel.

Son of Lebanese who emigrated to Brazil in the 1920s, and settled in Pindorama (São Paulo) it was there where he began his studies, then moving to live with family in the nearby town of Catanduva and later in the state capital, Sao Paulo.

at 20, he joined the Faculty of Law and Letters, but two years later moved to Philosophy course stop to travel to the United States and Canada (and later Germany and Lebanon, as after the end of the course). At 32 his first foray into writing, founding with some of the brothers “Jornal do Bairro.”

The novel that made him famous, “Left of the Father,” began to be drawn by that time, in 1968 but was only completed six years later.

There would be spending over a decade and in 1978 Raduan Nassar, the seventh son of Lebanese Nassar and Cassis, changed his life and bought a farm, devoting himself agriculture, activity that continues today. Before the newspaper had been rabbit breeder.

In Portugal, Raduan Nassar was published only in 1999, almost 23 years after the release of “Left of the Father” when the novel appeared in the catalog Clock d ‘ water, with a study Sabrina Sedlmayer.

followed shortly after, in 2000, the short story collection “Girl on the way”, the publishing house Books Lark, that in 2003, recover the author to the anthology of short stories “group photo” of various authors.

Since then, the premiums for his little work multiplied (in 1976, “Left of the Father” just won the Romance Award Brazilian Academy of Letters) and the books have been translated into Spanish, French, Italian, German and English, already this year.

He also received the fiction prize for “a cup of wrath” and the Jabuti Revelation prize , the Brazilian Book Chamber, the debut work, among other distinctions.

But about fame, little seems to matter, while remaining loyal to the field and, perhaps, the “archaic farming” , rarely giving interviews or appearing in public. And now, perhaps, there hung up the phone again.
