Singer Papa Wemba dies on stage in full play – Digital Journal



The Congolese singer Papa Wemba died Sunday on stage during a performance in the Urban Music Festival Anoumabo (FEMUA), of still unknown causes, advance the local media.
 
 

The festival takes place in Abidjan, the country’s largest city, and the first chance for the artist’s death point as a possible cause cerebral malaria that suffered and that forced him to be hospitalized for several days in February in Paris, leading to the cancellation of several concerts.

Known as the king of Congolese rumba, Papa Wemba and his orchestra were one of the highlights of the festival, and his death provoked a strong emotion, especially among its employees, who at first were not aware of his death and continued to work.

Born in 1949, Papa Wemba was the stage name of Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, which began to gain fame when, at age 20, joined the Congolese band Zaiko Langa Langa with other recognized musicians from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In 1977, Wemba and other members of Zaiko Langa Langa formed another band, Viva La Música, that brought them worldwide recognition and success in Europe, America, Asia, and popularity in the rest of Africa
