Led Zeppelin plagiarism accused in the song “Stairway to heaven” – Journal News

is the question that marks the order of the day in the music industry: the beginning of the iconic song of Led Zeppelin is a copy of the first chord “Taurus”?

the song “Stairway to heaven”, composed by guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant in 1971 for the album “Led Zeppelin IV”, is shrouded in controversy . The similarities of the beginning of the same with “Taurus”, instrumental band Spirit made four years before “Stairway to heaven”, appear to be sufficient for the following case to court.

The case dates back to 2014, but it is only now that Gary Klausner, US federal judge gave step to the complaint filed by Michael Skidmore, heir to the leader of the Spirit.

According to the same judge, “while it is true that this melodic progression is quite common in the music industry, the similarities transcend such a structure, “he argued, adding that” the subjective evaluation of the ‘feeling’ and ‘concept’ of two distinct work is best suited to a jury than a judge. “

So, on 10 May, a jury will decide whether the first minutes of “Stairway to heaven” are or not plagiarism.

in 1997, in an interview with “Listener” Randy California claimed authorship of the beginning of that song the band Robert Plant. Representatives Randy said Jimmy Page will be inspired to write the song after listening to the Spirit play “Taurus” between 1968 and 1969, years in which the band got together concerts.

The guitarist Led Zeppelin admitted that may have inspired the song of the Spirit, but said the plagiarism accusations are “ridiculous”.

Warner Music Group and bassist John Paul Jones are not involved in the case.
