Mexican writer Fernando del Paso Wins Cervantes 2015 – DCI

MADRID – The Mexican writer Fernando del Paso won on Thursday the Cervantes 2015 award, considered the most important award of Spanish-language literature, in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Hispanic romance.

The works of Del Paso, 80, entered the history of Mexico, and one of his most recognized novels, “the Empire News” addresses the figure of the Mexican Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg.

The jury awarded the prize to Del Paso “for their participation in the development of novel combining tradition and modernity, as did Cervantes”, said the Spanish Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Méndez de Vigo, in announcing the award. “His novels full of risk, relive key episodes in the history of Mexico making them universal,” he added.

The prize of 125,000 euros that the Spanish government gives every year, traditionally grants so alternating the Spanish writers and Latin America, in an unwritten law.

The winner of the Cervantes is chosen by a jury of academics, former winners and members of the press, and recognizes the work of a writer who through their work, contributed to enrich the Hispanic literary legacy
