Application of the wine cellars in Gaia to UNESCO presented in summer 2016 – publico

                 

                         
                     

                 

 
 

The Mayor of Gaia said Thursday that the municipality wants to present this summer’s candidacy Cellars of Port the heritage of humanity. “The deadline for submitting applications ends in early 2017. But we will present before the summer of next year,” he told Lusa Eduardo Vítor Rodrigues.

In January this year the president of the Port House has expressed its readiness Gaia to assist in the application process of the Caves do Vinho do Porto World Heritage Site. On the same day, former vice mayor of Gaia Firmino Pereira (PSD) said that this intention is not an “original idea” and that was announced by President of the Gaia House, Luís Filipe Menezes in October 2002 . Since January 2003 the application was being prepared by a committee of technicians from the Spanish-Portuguese King Afonso Henriques Foundation who have prepared dossiers of classifications of Historic Centre of Oporto and Douro Wine Region, awarded in 1996 and 2001, respectively.

In January 2003, the direction of the Association of Port Wine Companies (AEVP) met with Luís Filipe Menezes to discuss the application for World Heritage of the caves, proposed by the municipality. In 2006, the Socialist government of the time supported the candidacy of the cellars of Porto World Heritage Wine. The then Minister of Culture Isabel Pires de Lima, said that the project was able to be accepted by UNESCO.
