Joaquim de Almeida presents “Crisis Professionals” – Joaquim de Almeida made this Monday the European film presentation “Crisis Professionals”, produced by Grant Heslov and George Clooney. Debut film from Lisbon and Estoril Festival, aired last Friday, and reaches the national cinema to the general public on 19 November.
A film based on real facts, Joaquim de Almeida plays the role of Peter Gallo, the Bolivian presidential candidate. With catastrophic polls, decides to hire an American team of strategists in communication and campaign, led by the brilliant and untimely Jane Bodine ‘Calamity’ character played by Sandra Bullock.
The film is a humorous satire backstage election campaigns, where the end justifies all means.
AA BALL, Joaquim de Almeida talks about this great production.
- Hollywood has produced several films about the making of the election. What can the public expect from this Portuguese film as well as the power to see in a paper co-protagonist?
- It’s a fantastic story. The film is based on a documentary made in 2003, in the presidential elections in Bolivia. The story of a rich politician, educated in the United States, which presidential candidate. But as things are going wrong, hire in the United States a team to help win elections. The theme has a lot to do with the election period that we live in Portugal. Where we also had elections, with a candidate who won, who lost another and this to negotiate for Government. What seems to be something bad loser. I traditionally vote for the Socialist Party, I think this is a sore loser …
- This is a satirical film? Moralist? Didactic?
- It’s a fun satire to see how things work in politics. Americans feel they have to install a model of democracy in the world. And this film puts the focus on political professionals that are sold all over the world. Types are receiving million. They are paid like stars. Types are hired to win elections, as in this story where the main character, played by Sandra Bullock, decide an election to build the entire narrative.
- With the primary lit for nomination of presidential candidates in the United States, the film is even the way …
- Is being a forrobodó. And we see a person like Donald Trump running for President, what do not remember anyone. He who no longer build anything, is there only to sell the Trump name. Now imagine that behind those personalities there is a machine of these, people can not imagine what make these types behind the scenes. And they are sold around the world, the gold price.
- How do you think went to Sandra Bullock working with you?
- [laughs] I do not know, do not know … One day I was filming and told me that Sandra Bullock said I was the ideal person for the role. And I accepted. She is a person with very funny, has fantastic energy. I loved working with her. I enjoyed myself a lot in our conversations, because we were always together, there was a cohesive environment between actors.
- Interprets a presidential candidate. Ever, if only in their delusions, he admitted to apply for President of Portugal?
- Look, I now tell you that I am filming a character of a governor in Mexico, another movie … I’ve been very linked to the political … [laughs] But to answer your question never occurred to me to apply Me the President. Perhaps the president of the Chamber of Sintra, which is an important camera. But I start to realize that this is a country where it is impossible to be a politician. There are honest politicians, but there are also many who come with bad intentions. Happily ever get to see that some people arrested.
- Europe seems to have adopted the English title of the film, ie, “our brand is the crisis”. How does a Portuguese with one foot on each side of the Atlantic see Europe?
- On the one hand, as someone who believes that there has to be austerity in reducing public spending in excess of civil servants. But we also understand that we are to let the rich further enrich and unlock the middle and lower class. How does one do justice reforms and cutting the wages low? Austerity, yes, but going to get money where it in fact exists. Portugal did not take the sea of money that arrived from Europe. Lost fisheries, agriculture, industry, won in services, tourism and … high-powered cars. This now is a good country for holidays. But foreign holidays. And it should be a good country for … Portuguese.
