“The momentum that was generated around the Folio, which has such a rich program, made them attracted to here [Obidos] the near term other international festivals, which will give an international projection to this literary village,” said Jorge Barreto Xavier, during the inauguration of Folio – International Literary Festival of Obidos.
To him, the investment in making the festival – half a million euros reimbursed by EU funds and the Central Tourist Authority – turned Obidos “not only in the capital of literature, as the capital of culture,” demonstrating that “reading is a very important element in the experience of every day and can serve to create integrated plans for the territory. ”
An hour after opening to the public, the Folio was also already considered by the president of the Center for Tourism, Pedro Machado, a reinforcing factor of the notoriety of the region.
“Nothing better than having a festival of this size, with this ability to attract domestic and foreign government and, of course, the number of authors who will be at the festival to increase their ability to be able to internationalize” he said.
Alluding to the tourism growth of 16% recorded between January and August this year, responsible for tourism entity stressed the contribution of the festival to “further increase this growth,” reinforcing “the attractiveness of the region from its cultural identity” .
At the ceremony, the president of Obidos chamber, Humberto Marques stressed the program’s scope that will gather in the village 459 farmers, 154 literary sessions, 56 illustrators, 37 conferences, 36 shows and 14 exhibitions over eleven days.
“It is the literature on party atmosphere, a very inspired festival in Paraty [in Brazil], which allows us to have the cinema, music, dance, theater, exhibitions, pocket conversations, the writers’ solta` the walls, an intimate relationship between the author and his reader. ”
A program that the mayor believes that “challenge the Portuguese and international audiences” to flood into the village, according to data provided by the hotel units, “are having a lot of reserves in Brazil.”
The festival opened today with the journey of Solomon Elephant, a structure created by the group CLEAN WHEAT ACERT theater, inspired by the work of José Saramago, who will travel the streets of the town for five days.
A class of Pedro Mexia, about Agustina Bessa-Luís, the opening of several exhibitions and a concert of Maestro António Victorino D`Almeida also marked the program that closes today with a tribute concert to Vinicius de Moraes, with Miúcha, one of the voices of Brazilian Popular Music, sister of Chico Buarque, and Georgiana de Moraes, daughter of Brazilian poet.
Organized into five chapters (Folia, Folio Authors, Folio Educa, Folio Illustrates and Folio Parallel), the festival will host, until the 25th of book launches, debates, round tables, interviews, autograph sessions and conversations (unlikely, according to the organization), about a hundred writers and readers.
