RTP will pay tribute to the poet who died yesterday with the transmission of the documentary, “Herbert Helder – My God makes me is always an obscure poet” on RTP 2 today, 24 , by 23.30.
Herbert Helder was born in Madeira in 1930 and turned back to the island for exploration in Europe. Passed by the University of Coimbra but gave up because he thought it did not add anything to their training. He went adrift for several countries in Europe where he had professions as varied as guide sailors in prostitutes neighborhoods, vegetable cutter, restaurant employee, scrap of paper packer and stevedore. Gave vent to their imagination in private toilets of Paris. Lived precarious moments and even go hungry. He returned to Lisbon through the live of writing itself.
Recognized as one of the greatest contemporary Portuguese poets, the author of “The Death No Master” is even mentioned as a reference in the Portuguese poetry after Fernando Pessoa . The enigmatic and metaphorical universe of his poetry leads us to a cosmic dimension that approximates the great laws governing the movements of nature.
Like his poetry, Herbert Helder has always been to the public one enigmatic personality. Refused Pessoa Prize and with it more than 35 thousand euros. It was proposed by the Pen Club of Portugal and Portuguese candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature. But no one doubts that, should it win the highest international award in literature, were to be an author to refuse the prize, as did Jean-Paul Sartre.
The documentary about the greatest poet of second half of the twentieth century is broadcast tonight, by 23:30, in RTP2, being authored by Anabela Almeida and the holding of António José de Almeida.
