Discs are out on Friday – Swab

The music industry has reached an agreement for the release of albums is globally established on Fridays.

Publishers and artists are trying to coordinate an attempt to prevent the differences between regions help piracy of content in the age of “instant music.”

According to Frances Moore, CEO of IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry), the measure should enter into force this summer. The IFPI represents over 1300 publishers around the world, as well as musicians’ unions, retailers and the artists themselves.

“What is clear is that there is virtually unanimous agreement that a global release date is a good thing, “said Moore told AFP.

Traditionally, the albums are usually released on Mondays in Portugal, the United Kingdom and France, on Tuesdays in the United States, Wednesday in Japan and on Fridays in Australia and Germany.

From the summer, new albums and singles are now on sale at 00:01 am Friday. However, not all independent publishers share that same opinion. Martin Mills, founder of the English Beggars Banquet, which manages the catalogs of labels like 4AD or Rough Trade, believes that “the niches will be marginalized.”
