Oscars: the confirmation, the surprise and the disappointment – the Observer

it Was announced this Tuesday the list of nominees for the 89th edition of the Oscars, delivered on the 26th of February. And without big surprises: "La La Land", the musical from Damien Chazelle starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who managed to divide the critics, was the film that more nominations received. Already "Moonlight", another of the big favorites, fell short of expectations, when compared with the film Chazelle, at the same time that represents a success and a change: this is a film made in the margins of the big studios and that focuses the argument on the dilemmas of a family of the afro-american in the us today.

All this is also related to one of the new features (although no major surprises): the greater diversity of actors and films included in this year’s list. A year after the controversy about the racial diversity in the Oscars if you have installed it in Hollywood, and has led to drastic changes in the rules that allow the entry of new members in the Academy of motion picture Arts and Sciences, nominations for 2016 are much more diverse, with films such as "Moonlight" and "Fences" in the race for the prize of Best Film. Among the actors named include six black — in 2016, and for the second consecutive year, all the nominees were white.

Already if I was really seeing: "La La Land", Damien Chazelle, was the movie that appointments raised this Tuesday. There were 14 in all (in 13 different categories, two in the Best Song), a number that has only been reached twice in the history of the Oscars, the awards were created in 1929 — a with "Eve" (1950), and another with "Titanic" (1997).

The musical, with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the main roles, tells the story of a jazz pianist who falls in love with an actress from Los Angeles. Long considered one of the favorites for the awards this year by the american critics, the film has already several awards, including seven Golden Globes, a record absolute.

The categories for which he was appointed are the following:

  1. Best Film
  2. Best Director
  3. Best lead Actor
  4. Best lead Actress
  5. Best Original screenplay
  6. Best Picture
  7. Best editing
  8. Best Production Design
  9. built in wardrobes
  10. Best Soundtrack
  11. Best Original Song (two nominations)
  12. Best Sound Editing
  13. Best mixed Sound

Another confirmation of the value of the Lucas Hedges. With 20 years, and for his performance in "Manchester By The Sea", is nominated for Best Actor in a Secondary.

The largest will have to see, once more, with "La La Land" and with the fact that you have achieved two nominations in the same category (Best original Song). It is not the first time that something similar happens but not usual. For example: in 2001, Steven Soderbergh was nominated for Best Director for "Traffic" and "Erin Brokovich" (won by the first); in the same way that Michael Curtiz was nominated in 1939 for Best Director for "Angels in blackface," and "Four Daughters" (not won). But, already now, the clarification: "La La Land" may only win the Oscar for one of the songs and not both, of course.

By this no one expected: "Passengers", Morten Tyldum, with the actors Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt in the lead roles, managed two nominations — for Best Production Design (the category for which they are also named "La La Land" and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", the prequel to the "Harry Potter"), and Best Soundtrack (composed by Thomas Newman). It is certain that these are the categories most techniques but, even so, and after the disdain with which it was received by critics, turned out to be a revelation. And with more nominations than "Silence," Scorsese. this is the same.

One of the major candidates for the Oscars was "Moonlight", Barry Jenkins (arrive to the rooms on day 2). Touted by many as one of the favorites, the movie about a young black man in the city of Miami ended up receiving eight nominations, including Best Actor Secondary, Best Actress, Secondary, Best Director and Best Film. There were few but all in all, it was a number much lower than the "La La Land", close to half. Even so, it is named for some of the major categories. Win every one of them would not be all surprising and this will be one of the main issues that we will want to see answered on the 26th of February.

The biggest disappointment, however, seems to have been "Silence," Martin Scorsese. Despite positive reviews, the film about a Portuguese jesuit who travels to Japan only managed one nomination — for Best Picture. Also "Jackie" (debut in Portugal on the 9th of February), the film by Pablo Larraín about Jacqueline Kennedy and the moments that followed the assassination of John F. Kennedy was only nominated for three categories — Best Main Actress, Best wardrobe, and Best Soundtrack.

Amy Adams is not nominated for best actress. This Academy could explain it better. At the same time back not to give space to a film of super heroes. Many hoped that the "Deadpool" could something. Good: he could not.

Meryl Streep has been nominated for the 20th time by the film "Florence Foster Jenkins", directed by Stephen Frears. Case Streep win, this will be the fourth Oscar of her career. The actress 67-year-old was awarded the first prize of the Academy in 1980, by the secondary role in "Kramer against Kramer". Won for the first time in the category of Best Actress in 1983, with "The Choice of Sofia", and then in 2012 with "The Iron Lady".

Recently, the actress caught the attention of the media to drive direct criticism to the Trump during his speech at the Golden Globes. Streep, who received the career prize "Cecil B. de Mille" awarded by the Association of Foreign Press of Hollywood, has accused the President of the United States of America of using "their position of power to amesquinhar the other".

in A speech where he recalled the "diversity that enriches the world of cinema", Streep spoke of the dangers of "following the examples of wrong": "This instinct to humiliate, when it comes from someone who has access to the platforms of public promotion, someone in a position of power, grows in the lives of all of us, because it gives permission to everyone to act the same way. Disrespect creates more disrespect, violence encourages more violence. When someone uses their position of power to amesquinhar the other, we all lose," he said.
