Frederico Lourenço’t expect to be the Prize in Person this year. It was the one that confessed to the DN.
professor Frederick Lawrence would not be the candidate most predictable until yesterday at noon, the hour in which religiously was announced to be the latest Prize in Person. From this revelation, the jury assembled in the Palace of Seteais, which was on the shoulders also the responsibility of honor, a distinction that celebrates three decades of existence, it was clear that Lawrence was the common denominator of a Portuguese to glorify. As if it was one of the protagonists whose existence homeric has translated from the Greek, and that were in the Story over the last two thousand years, in the scenario of the Iliad and of the Odyssey for example. Not enough of these heroes, decided to recreate a “new” Jesus through the translation of the Bible.
The Greek, of course, it is after all the translator is more official this language in its look, classic in Portugal. This was one of the reasons to be the 33rd Prize in Person, as the minutes of the jury: “Is an example of discipline, work capacity and lucidity of the intellectual in the great plan of classical studies and humanistic, a fundamental part of cultural life and scientific of developed countries.” This “trait unique” Laurent offered “the Portuguese language the great works of classical literature”. So it was that the president of the jury, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, clarified the reasons for awarding the academic 53-year-old, who does not lack a lot of the work-oriented personal and confessional, as well as the lover experts of various arts – such as ballet, poetry, music, and theater -even though the strong presence of the translation from the Greek of the Bible will overshadow by now all his activity, in particular to date & #8211; just a couple of years ago – in that you want to close the loop with the publication of the six volumes of the Septuagint.
Frederico Lourenço’t expect to be the Prize in Person this year, it was the one that confessed to the DN in the hours that followed the announcement: “I was very surprised because it wasn’t at all expecting.” Considers that “it is not a distinction that falls from the sky”, so the announcement left him “very happy”.
it Might be this Prize the corollary of a year in which it took the Bible back to the first line of interest of the people? “Yes, eventually the output of the first volume of the new translation of the Bible may have suggested to the jury,” he says. Soon adds: “Perhaps were unwilling to reward someone in the area of classical studies and of the literature of old, which is one of the best ways to give a good visibility to this area, where there is little official help.”
To Frederick Lawrence, the Latin and the Greek are the languages that is in a bad situation: “Because it does not give a perspective on professional immediate return and who you dedicated need to invest a lot and have a lot of patience.” Wonders if this is not an attempt by the jury to inform the public on the importance of what is not immediately in spite of its cultural value: “I Believe that yes, because the Award focuses on an area that has a value that is a thousand years old and that runs the risk of being forgotten between us. I’m a big apologist of the Greek and the Latin have a very important place in secondary education and university in our country and that should be encouraged, but this is not the case in practice.”
this Will be a Prize award the Person a new lease of life to the translator of the Greek. Responds: “it Was great, but I don’t need this encouragement because I’m very convinced of what I’m doing and do the work with a great passion. But it is a recognition and a vote of confidence to continue: That makes me happy.”
The publishing success of the first volume of the Bible also surprised Lawrence: “I Never know to predict the success of things, but I thought that the texts of the Bible are interesting enough for people to have, at the end of two thousand years, it’s still a curiosity to read and know under another translation. Had this for sure, but what was unknown was how many people would be interested by the book. I am pleased that many.”
As to the new interests that this translation of the Book may create in Frederico Lourenço, such as a greater knowledge of the theological thought, this denies such a possibility: “my interest is becoming more historical, because I’m always trying to recreate and re-imagine – in my head the true Jesus, or the São Paulo real; who were these people of the truth, and what they said really. How close these historical figures can we reach? I consider myself more a historian than a theologian, because it is the History that fascinates me.”
the Choir of reactions
it Can be said that the choir of the reactions heard after having knowledge of the assignment of the Person to Frederico Lourenço was great and in tune. Since then the president of the Republic: “I Am very cheerful, very happy, as a citizen, as an academic and as President of the Republic. This is a unique character in our culture, it is a work also odd. The people of the most diverse sensibilities, religions, cultures, they believe that it is a work striking, and Frederico Lourenço is indeed a striking personality in a Portuguese university, in the Portuguese culture”.
the predecessor of The Lawrence, the sculptor Rui Chafes, also commented: “Absolutely fair and extraordinary, and maintains more once the integrity of the Prize, which has been a behavior-free and exemplary. The cultures classic can not be forgotten, and people like Frederick Lawrence are essential to keep the flame alive.” For the sociologist António Barreto, the assignment values “an academic work very seriously, and that was much sought after by the public, leading to the great classics of the universal literature to the “tops” of the sales. There are people, who favour the work in team, other the lonely. The jury has been able to reward both the options”.
– side editorial, the head of the Guatemalan by the great project of translation of the Greek Bible, Francisco José Viegas, said that was the award winning “a person who over years has developed a work absolutely remarkable, with great dedication, commitment and sensitivity to the dissemination of classical literature, the root of our culture”.
