The tenth edition of the Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival (Leffest), from 4 to 13 November, will count with more than 60 guests, such as Emir Kusturica, Jim Jarmusch and Jerzy Skolimowski. With a budget of around 550 thousand euros, lower than previous years, according to the director Paul White, the festival will take place in different areas of Lisbon and Cascais, as the Cultural Centre of Belém (CCB), the espaço Nimas, the House of Stories Paula Rego and, as a novelty, the halls of cinema from the Cascais Shopping and the Pavilion 31 of the Central Hospital Psychiatric of Lisbon.
"the idea of The Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival, is to make a festival, with different characteristics from the other festivals. A place where great figures if they could find," said Paul White this Tuesday in a press conference, in the CCB.
to add to The already announced tributes to Jean-Luc Godard, Jerzy Skolimowski, the Leffest 2016 will also highlight and present a retrospective of Emir Kusturica, Teresa Villaverde, Pascal Bonitzer, Daniel Rosenfeld, and Agustín Díaz Yanes. About Godard, in addition to a complete retrospective of the work, that counts nearly one hundred titles, there will also be an international symposium.
The Hero of Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson, and Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford, will open and will close respectively the festival. Both out-of-competition, as happens also with The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez, Wim Wenders, Paterson, Jim Jarmusch, and The Woman Who Left, Lav Diaz.
In the competition are American Honey, Andrea Arnold, Christine, Antonio Fields, Elle, by Paul Verhoeven (which debuted in Portugal until the end of the year), Little Men, by Ira Sachs, or Nocturama, Bertrand Bonello, a total of 13 titles. The jury of the official selection will take part in Jerzy Skolimowski, Marthe Keller, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Valentina Lodovini.
Among the more than 60 guests are filmmakers, actors, writers, and artists of different areas of culture. In addition to Kusturica, whose latest film, On the Milky Road, without the date of debut trading, it will also be displayed – Paul White highlighted the presence of the pianist and argentinian Martha Argerich, present at the screening of the film Bloody Daughter, your daughter Stéphanie Argerich, the Spanish writer Enrique Villa-Matas (features the new book, Marienbad Mirror), and the poet, the syrian Adonis, that will release The Rainbow of the Moment. There are several guests that have not confirmed presence "due to" appointments”, according to Paul White, who said that several of them “had worked with Jean-Luc Godard”.
"Everything indicates that the festival will be a success", said at the press conference Salvato Telles de Menezes, president of the Fundação D. Luís I, Cascais. As for Catarina Vaz Pinto, councillor for Culture of the municipality of Lisbon, “the festival is very unique and of enormous artistic quality” but the challenge, “are the public, who continue to be short of the festival."
The final program will be available on the 21 October, the date that the tickets will be put up for sale.
