Jamaica is to expect everything. And with love. A love sui generis, of course. Let’s face it: on the outskirts of Kingston, the capital of the country, there for the decade of 50, was a movement that gathered rival groups that were trying to give a face to the dancehall and the reggae. Radio to the shoulder to mount a front-to-front that put in combat (healthy) different souns systems.
it Is certain that at the time what happened to call of sound clash was far less civilized, it was an excuse to flay opponents and stealing their equipment. Now it is an event that means a full house each time it invades a club in London, Toronto or New York, just some of the cities where they had already expressed this of which we speak. The day came and the Culture Clash to shake Lisbon, this Thursday.
The importer of the concept was the Red Bull Music Academy, that – and very well, if you allow us to – he thought of a culture clash to the Portuguese, to be sure. If out there – especially in the United Kingdom, where it is rooted – the concept of battle, of elevation of an MC with a DJ in the back, is the great fruit of the fifth, here, in the Coliseu dos Recreios, the party goes with the water from the cooked.
Four crews, or teams, led by the four captains, have the mission to devise and defend your sweater, or better, the music they make. Branko is the crew leader of the Club Atlas, Moullinex of the Moullinex Live Machine, DJ Ride of the Pack and Pedro Coquenão guides you through the Beat + Kambas and own Kota!, each in its own stage, a provision in a circle, something rare in this room.
Quality does not lack, already noticed. Only that all the virtuous need to establish commitments, rules to not run away by cancels ajar. So here are they: each crew has to create the original music for the event and will have to do it in only four rounds of ten minutes. In the last of these rounds the crews can call to the stage special guests in securing more noise. Yes, because are the decibels of the audience the set the crew of the winning at the end of the accounts. Hold up-well.
there’s somebody more global than Branko. It is, therefore, natural that the producer and founder of Buraka Som sistema is very comfortable. "It was an event that had already seen it a few times, so they invited me, I just wanted to participate, to be able to have a look on all types of music if done so far and transplant it into four rounds of ten minutes, it seemed to me interesting," he explains.
Here is expected to work hips, of course. Because even if we think well, it was very fault of Branko and his companions who, in the middle of the decade 2000, (re)learn to dance. The lisbon producer found in the Red Bull Culture Clash a format useful to measure the dimension of the music that has been making: "it Is an interesting concept for me as an artist, I think an objective way to expose your music in direct competition with other sounds and other type of performers. Now that everything is so virtual you have something that is so immediate it seems to me very well".
The class is composed by the own Branko, DJ Riot, Pongolove, Kalaf, Carlão and Fred Ferreira. And if Branko is the foreman, the master of the works, we know what will make the Club Atlas take-off:
"Club Atlas will win because it has weight, we talk about music that marked generations. The gain here happens when you can you go seek out people who have already bought the ticket to go support another crew and end up to make more noise for it," he says.
Already knows this side countercurrent Pedro Coquenão. It ensures that it not already have worked with the people of the Red Bull Music Academy and might not be here "because I don’t see anything that is artistic expression with a competitive component, but I wanted to hear the proposal.
The artist was convinced. Do it in a healthy way, without throwing stones at the opponents, that for Coquenão are more companions. And its those that brings to the stage, more still. And that could not be few. the "The beautiful african tradition, that in which I was raised, dictates that it is always one more at the table", shoots. We are trying to fetch the table for support. At the bedside, and not need to pay the account, is Bonga. Who has Bonga has it all. The layout is complete with DJ, Satellite dishes, Karlon, Nigga Poison, in the voice and three dancers — yes, in the crew Hit "the dance is to the side of the music". André and Gonçalo Cabral, as well as Bernardino Tavares, will be in charge of the choreography.
At the time of the inquirirmos about what will come out in arms as a captain in winner, Pedro Coquenão responds thus: "I have won. Having achieved these people is done, I don’t want more, I’m not going so much to the dispute of the points, in the championship, but I know that in this sport, that is my sport, having people I like around, I am the winner". The bigger concern, and perhaps unique, are the technical issues, that can always happen. Even for this, the Beat is well prepared: "I am Kota [Bonga] from my side and that makes me feel the guy with the back warmer of the world, if something fails we talked a bit, and what we can handle."

Fasten the collars that the Dog is to want to release. The crew of DJ Ride is probably the one that best represents the concept most basic to a sound clash, the perfect union of a DJ and a MC. The concept by which the Ride already looked forward: "I Followed some clashes international, yes. Out there has been very connected to hip-hop and the artists whom I like, such as A$ AP Rocky, ‘ve even seen one with the crew of Skepta… had a notion that this concept, sooner or later, would come to Portugal. I was happy to be a part of the first experience".
At the time of choosing the team owner, the DJ most awarded Portuguese had big doubts. "It was easy to invite the remaining elements, they are friends and artists that fit perfectly here. the The MGDRV, in addition to the energy on stage, have a past connected to the bass music and grime. Jimmy P is a dude that is in a scene more crossover, is a rapper but also sings… it had be".
humility is based on them as well, the same that Ride uses to say that this is not going to be easy to win, mainly because they know that they do not have "the popularity of Carlão or of Branko but obviously that is to give the best", before adding that the house work was done, so winning is always a possibility: "The set that we have prepared for you is always open, fast transitions, many mashups, edits, a series of jokes. In the background: very hip-hop and bass music, hopefully the other teams will invest in other sounds," he says.
Here the refinement starts at the name chosen for the crew. Moullinex Live Machine does not arise at random, is that this is the only crew that will be on display in the band mode, a formation composed by Xinobi, The Chick and The Legendary Tigerman, the more Moullinex, of course. "No one is going to play everything live, knowing that this Culture Clash is an idea that the withdrawal of the sound clashes jamaicans I like to subvert the concept of battles of the DJs through to a full band. It is a different energy from the DJ set, this is what we will explore," it said.
Luis Clara Gomes, a name that appears on his identity card, was already familiar with the initiative and claims that it is the "building component" that you matter. "I Accepted immediately because I soon began to bubble up ideas, the concept appeals to me because what is being created in the contest it is all original, something that might not happen in a format that is less intense. Must be all on maximum, there is big space for subtleties, this pleases me."
on the other stages awaiting breaks, knees to bend, kuduro to want to be semba and the want to be funk, hip-hop, with nuances more commercial, hit radio, in the Moullinex Live Machine nothing of this. Releasing the guitars and the keyboards that here there is no DJ set.
it is Understood here, as in other formations that the rivalries that will create are the tools of friendship, without the need for sores. To Moullinex, the poster of this Red Bull Culture Clash is a synonym of wonders to the music made in Portugal: "it Is a sign of how well we are in to electronic music, or of nature more danceable, with respect. In this event are represented in four very different groups of people but end up drinking of the same influences, we have to be the target of contamination is common and this is beautiful". Truce, yes, but only at the end: war is war.
