Queer Lisboa. Eight films will not want to miss
The 19th edition of the Queer Film Festival takes place between 18 and 26 September, at Cinema São Jorge in Lisbon. Of the 76 films announced, chose eight.
Praia do Futuro
Almost to mark 20 years of life, the Queer Lisboa is back with a packed schedule of surprises, guests and films in national premiere. This year, Brazil is one of the prominent countries in the festival and in the opening session, with “Praia do Futuro”, Karim Aïnouz, one of the leading names of queer cinema. The movie features Wagner Moura playing a lifeguard from Praia do Futuro that ends up falling in love with a friend of the man who saved and go to Berlin, leaving Ayrton brother (Jesuit Barbosa) back.
Eisenstein in Guanajuato
The film of Peter Greenaway premiered in competition at the Berlin Film Festival and was chosen to close the Queer on 26 September. A portrait of the visionary Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein (here played by Elmer Bäck) and his mysterious passage through Mexico. It was in 1931 that Sergei Eisenstein traveled to Guanajuato to film “Que Viva Mexico,” which would eventually find a new culture and start a revolution inside. The film has been well received by the film critics.
Lilting
“Lilting” Hong Khaou, debuted at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and went on to win a prize, the Cinematography, in the “World Cinema Dramatic”. The film tells the story of a Sino-Cambodian mother
trying to understand the child, Kay, after his untimely death in London. Although not speak the same language, the loss eventually link it to another man, Richard, Kay’s boyfriend. Communication is so complicated that Richard hires a translator to make everything easier and so they can share memories.
Eternal Love
Last year, Marcal Forés won the International Festival of Sitges Film (land known also for being the gay capital) with the film “Eternal Love”. The film tells the story of a teacher at a language school, at the end of the classes, it is customary stroll through the coupling area of Montjuïc, in Barcelona. Therein lies Carlos, one of his students, for those who feel an attraction. The soundtrack of the feature film prize is in charge of Don The Tiger also an emerging artist. A beautiful and obscure film, say the critics.
El Hombre Nuevo
Stephania was born in Nicaragua but was called Roberto. It was adopted by a Uruguayan couple in the Sandinista revolution and, 30 years later, while Stephania, struggle for acceptance of society and family. “El Hombre Nuevo”, the documentary by Aldo Garay in competition at Queer, is an intimate portrait of the life of this woman, with scenes of everyday life and interviews with friends and family, as his mother. Politics, violence, drugs and prostitution are some of the topics covered in this documentary, which also draws a social portrait since the 70s.
New Dubai
We have said that Brazil was one of the featured countries at the festival, with several feature films and filmmakers invited. Gustavo Vinagre, director of “New Dubai”, a film where sex is used as a political weapon against real estate speculation, is one of them. The director will discuss the limits of the sexually explicit representation in a workshop entitled “See or not see, that is the question.” Brazil, the duo of Filipe and Márcio Matzembacher Reolon directors will also be present to introduce “Beira – Mar”., In competition
Pauline s’arrache
The French film “Pauline s’arrache” was one of the most talked about in the section of ACID, the Independent Film Association for its diffusion, which takes place during the Festival de Cannes. The film’s director Emilie Brisavoine can resemble a long video posted on YouTube by a teenage blogger and annoying, but turns out to be much more than that and it’s worth giving it a try. A familiar look and intimate, that was not the director to film his own family. The feature film will integrate the Queer Art section.
Je Suis the Toi
“Je Suis the Toi” by David Lambert, in the main section of competition of this 19th edition of the Queer, tells the story of Luke, an Argentine girl who prostitutes herself, and that to leave your country, conquest, through a chat on the Internet, a gay Belgian baker, Henry, who paid him the plane ticket so that they can finally see. Things get complicated when Luke falls in love with an employee of the bakery. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the LGBT Film Festival of Toulouse and may also surprise here.
