The Portuguese writer Helia Correia was chosen unanimously, the winner of the 2015 edition of Luís de Camões Prize, the most prestigious literature in Portuguese, granted by the governments of Brazil and Portugal, said on Wed Thursday (17) the Ministry of Culture. The author will receive The award includes the amount of 100 thousand euros
“Helia Correia was chosen unanimously by the jury committee that met today at the National Library Foundation (FBN),” he said in a statement folder, without specifying the date of delivery of the prize to the Portuguese writer.
Born in Lisbon in 1949, Helia Correia is one of the main representatives of what is known as the “generation of 80″ thanks to his prose, which led her to be one of the most prominent writers in English in decades.
Although he excelled primarily with prose, the author has taken the first steps within the literary poetry, which led to publish two books of poems early in his career:. “The separating of the waters” (1981) and “The number of the living” (1982)
Degree in Romance philology from the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon, never abandoned like the theme that would eventually scoring all his work.
Since 1983, Helia Correia developed his work with poetry, drama and fiction, with some works, such as “Montedemo” and “Florbela”, adapted to the theater.
Among his most outstanding works are the novels “Soma” (1987) and “Eternal House” (1991), and the collection of short stories “Twenty steps and other tales”, awarded the Prize Camilo Castelo Branco Tales in 2013.
The author was chosen unanimously by the jury, composed of writers Pedro Mexia, Mia Couto, Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna and Antonio Carlos Secchin, and by university teachers Rita Marnoto and Innocence Forest.
With the granting of this award, the writer becomes part of a select group of big names such as Jorge Amado (1994) and the Portuguese José Saramago (1995) and António Lobo Antunes ( 2007), among others.
The Camões Prize was created in 1988 in agreement between Portugal and Brazil, in order to distinguish the authors that enrich common language. The first edition was delivered in 1989
