DiCaprio: Is this? – Vision

Perhaps, on the 28th of February, Leonardo DiCaprio go up on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and the entire property, declare, “I’m king of the world!” as did his character Jack 19 years ago, in Titanic, in what remains his most famous representation. It would signal that, after 41 years, finally won an Oscar for best actor. Thing I’ve been four times to happen and just always postponed. The Golden Globe received last Sunday definitely puts it ahead in the favorites list. And the question becomes: what he did to get here? Or rather, what did not? Just compare the washed face, somewhat feminine, Jack in Titanic, with a wild beard in a body full of brands of Hugh Glass in The Reborn, for we realize the metamorphosis DiCaprio. Even his crystal clear voice was replaced by a afónico murmur, and much of the DiCaprio movie passes it to gasp. This says a lot of psychology of the jurors: Although Hollywood feeds the glamor of their beautiful faces, not give them so many Oscars

Unless, of course, when the actor shows that can turn up.. That is to say:. Before monster that beautiful

To prepare for this demanding role, Leonardo DiCaprio months lived in great discomfort and learned survival techniques. His delivery was full, and that should impress the members of the Academy, particularly sensitive to physical efforts of the actors (there are several examples of winners who have won or lost weight to better fulfill their roles) and not in your competitor Matt Damon has spent a day to be in space to study its role in Lost in Mars.

Although the nomination for the Oscars is virtually certain at the time that we write this text are not yet candidates known, but it would be outrageous if this does not happen the statuette is not guaranteed. Not least because the Academy range from an irritating predictability and embarrassing surprises. And there are stronger candidates. In addition to Matt Damon, who, as you know, is one of the most beloved figures in Hollywood, there Eddy Redmaine, who had been appointed last year by The Theory of Everything, in the demanding role of Stephen Hawking, and now has a performance Detachable in The Danish Girl, which makes transsexual (which could also impress the Academy).

A RISKY CHOICE

The choice of Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Hugh Glass is not at all obvious. Easily anyone remember a dozen actors who more easily deliver this role. Daniel Day-Lewis to Javier Bardem. Incidentally, before the film was given to director Alejandro Iñárritu were probed for the role Samuel L. Jackson and Christian Bale. DiCaprio is not a hard, it was not how the star system the US designed. By accepting this role, it is destroying and question her own image and identity as an actor. It’s like watching Chuck Norris in a musical or Carlos do Carmo in a heavy metal band. Alejandro Iñárritu risked the mistake of casting and got away successfully. Still benefiting from a surprise effect and DiCaprio’s charisma, which revealed all its versatility. No doubt with another actor would not be the same film. And it is also true that Iñárritu has proved to be astute in casting: Birdman, who won the Oscars last year, had two extraordinary actors:. Michael Caine and Edward Norton

The Reborn, the antagonist Di-Caprio is Tom Hardy (was to be Sean Penn). But everything is done paraDiCaprio shine, despite the Mexican director not abdicate his own style, which involves a free camera movement. That is, despite being a film with a budget of 135 million dollars, aesthetically it is independent cinema. Spending increased significantly, not only for deDiCaprio cachet but also the insistence of Iñárritu to shoot with natural light (first in Canada, then in Argentina). Formally, the Reborn is somewhere between these Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers, and The Tree of Life, Terrence Malick.

A WESTERN WITHOUT ‘saloons’

The Reborn is based on the true story of Hugh Glass, American explorer of the eighteenth century that survived a bear attack and dying, was abandoned to its fate by your fellow travelers.

The Glass character is a legend similar to that of David Crockett or Billy the Kid, is part of American popular culture with countless variants. Had already been adapted to film by John Huston in 1971 on Man in the Wilderness, changing the name of Hugh Zachary Bass (played by Richard Harris).

Iñárritu adapted version of the story told in the novel Michael Panke on which made some significant changes. He made her a sort of realistic pre-western. The western, say, is a genus in decline sideways Hollywood since the Indians were officially declared helpless victims and cowboys Broncos men. It has become politically incorrect and socially unacceptable to have as heroes those who kill the indigenous people … While The Reborn is not a western in the classic sense, the projection of this film can serve, in a way, to revitalize the genre. Its realistic aesthetic confronts us with the stereotypical image of other films, as for example in the setting of the bar / saloon, more like some kind of medieval tavern. There is no train lines or star sheriffs to the chest. There is also no revolver duels, because the pistols were still too crude and unwieldy objects. But there are great scenes. The principal, at all levels, is the bear attack. And it can be ensured that no animal was injured or mistreated in the shooting because no animals were used. Of all the realistic requirements (such as natural light), Iñárritu gave in at this point and DiCaprio opposite a bear … digital, but no less realistic and scary.

The Reborn is, of course a great candidate to Oscars in several categories. It leads us to a plentiful land West, ice plains, dominated by Indians, still no time or space for the establishment of settlers. It is a wild land. Wild brutality of nature, but also by the nature of men that inhabit it. A film that will make DiCaprio “king of the world”, and Iñárritu, it took more than five years to prepare it, one of the most sought after writers in Hollywood.
