The actresses, the director and the writer built a movie from puzzles. Death is a way to talk about life
Checkers Game who is now debut in the rooms is not one of those movies where the actors memorize the script and interpret what was delivered to them. It was built by the director, the five actresses and writer, a dip that was too deep into each one. Only half of the process the director felt that there was a real movie. In the end, when the lights come on, every viewer has designed its own film, made of memories, loss, love and, above all, friendship.
In the beginning, there was a message that Patricia Sequeira sent to Rita Blanco Ana Standard, Ana Nave, Maria João Luís and Fatima Belo. A small animation with a doll and the question: “Will you play with me?” All responded affirmatively, but the first reaction of each was significant. Both Anas were limited to say yes. Maria João thought it was a pornographic application (the doll was naked). Fatima thought it was a virus. Rita picked up the phone and asked, “What is this”
They started conversations to six: noisy, confusing, intimate, with some “plot points”, explains Patricia. The director is very accustomed to plots, given the long experience of performing telenovelas – Blood Ties , Winter Sun , salt sea, and series Naked City , Tell me about Fo i (second part), And Then Goodbye and now Therapy that insist on doing despite a thousand other tasks as artistic coordinator of producing SP TV
The plot points could be: Maria John is angry with Ana Nave because it was not his mother’s funeral it;. or anas not speak, who knows why; or there was a kiss that may have been just a kiss or more. The whole thing open for the five actresses to write. Joined four days in a cottage in Alcacer do Sal, each in his house, and each received a handwritten letter by Patricia. Marta was the farewell letters, the friend who had died and that was the reason they met together in a space built for her. They were, Patricia, and Rita Blanco dogs. “I told him” Please do not bring dogs “, and of course it took and of course it was essential to have taken,” says Patricia, who recalls that every morning did yoga (“it was a lot of energy together”).
The letters were all different, directed precisely to each, and only she could read. Read to tears. Patricia says that at one point he felt he was created a strong emotional climate that had a movie to do, and he had to be there, in that house, nowhere else thought before. The characters grew, made the stories that Patricia proposed and the lives of each of those five actresses.
Only after all this work was entrusted to the poet and journalist Filipa Leal, to write the Checkers Game argument. Filipa had just lost his mother, a sudden death, a shock to cut in half this woman’s life 35 years. What she wrote fit the characters as if it had participated in the whole process, but the dialogue for it worked made everything better.
Never in the film is unknown how was the missing friend, the constant absence that has at last a presence so strong. At the head of each actress – and the director, and screenwriter – Marta certainly has many faces, traces of many people
The film was made by Patricia Sequeira during the 2014 holiday funded by itself. – cost “140,000 euros and something else” – and had financial support from the company that released the film material
