The goodbye to the “Girls” Dunham “that should be everything and nothing” – Diário de Notícias – Lisbon

When is 03.00 in the early hours of Monday morning, begins the end of the series, written and starred by Lena Dunham. Over six seasons, the story of a group of girls without the popes in the language I wanted to help you understand women. Quite applauded, but also heavily criticized, the plot of HBO you’ll find in the cinema in your future

The goal has been set for a little over a year when it celebrated 30 life, Lena Dunham wanted to say goodbye to Girls. The series he created, wrote and stars in since 2012 would not exceed the half a dozen seasons. And so shall it be. The premiere of the sixth season, in the early hours of Monday in the world – in Portugal, in the TVSéries at 03.00 – is saying goodbye to the story of a group of girls freshly entering adulthood. But it will be a goodbye on the small screen with the promise of a return to the large. “I just want to pass enough time [between the end of this series and the release of the film] for them to return at a different time,” explained Dunham. “If HBO paid for two films Sex and the City, I hope that you also pay for this.”

The farewell was planned, but by no means ceased to cause “pain”. “Is our life, our friends, our identity – are a lot of things wrapped into one. Is how to leave the college, the university and divorciarmo us. It is a lot board”, he complained Dunham on claims that the DN had access, about have thought of Girls from his 24 years.

The girls of the title are Hannan (Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Jessa (Jemima Kirke) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet). The four characters who speak without taboo of sexuality, drugs, disappointments, professional and love problems, which led to critical applaud the fact that the story has been narrated in a more realistic way than most of the series. So realistic that, if it were today – and given the political climate in the United States since the election of Donald Trump as president -, the creator does not repeat the adventure. “Would be very afraid of writing now,” he admits.

Still, the american actress stresses that the important thing is to “keep making art” and this is not always “need to be political or to take a position”. “It is not necessary to be all aligned to destroy Donald Trump. It will be great if this is a side effect, but the important thing is that we do what we like”, complete.

miss Hannah who played over the six seasons are restricted to what they learned: fight for what you want, “even though sometimes you do way less graceful”. That does not give you leave good memories is “the sound and the critical mass” around the series. “I don’t feel sad to leave it behind. No one needs to live with this for years,” he said.

Girls has been called classist, racist and transphobic since her debut. “It came to pass the huge thing at the time. It was supposed to be a series that represents everything and nothing. Everyone had an opinion, even if they never had seen, and this is too much energy coming in our direction.”

“Destroy my body”

“Very tired.” Are still the words that they overlap the other when Lena Dunham speaks of the end of the production awarded over the last five years with 16 awards, among them Emmys, and Golden Globes. “Destroy my body to do it. But I’m 30 years old, I’m going to be able to recover,” he adds. In the most recent edition of Glamour magazine, for which if left shooting to the side of the other Girls of the legs bare, praised the fact that the publication does not have to resort to the treatment programs of the image, and left “the cellulite to the shows”. “It was very important to me. Even with 30 years, has had a giant impact on my self-esteem look at this cover of the magazine and see that it is my body that is there, that I am the one who ali is, without editing.”

Farewell with guests

Chelsea Peretti, Joy Bryant, Matthew Rhys and Riz Ahmed are some of the actors invited to participate in the last season of the series. The invitations went to Dunham. “The Riz is an incredible actor and I think we managed that he would accept even before its explosion in news media. If we had recorded two weeks later on the calendar it would not allow him to accept the invitation,” reported the writer. “It is a very important part of this season. The episode in which it enters was the last one that we did,” he stressed.

Already the chapter with Matthew Rhys is “a pride”. “What I love is that lots of artists want to be in the role of the hero. Want to interpret the young man’s good and beautiful. The Matthew was the only one who heard him say: “please, makes me look more bald.” He wanted to embrace the character in its deepest form. Today, I can’t imagine me to have done Girls without it.”
