Rio will win this by its 450 years – will be completed in 2015 – a sculpture inspired by the Barcelos cock made by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. The work, called Cock Pop, will be exposed in Leme in Rio’s South Zone.
The sculpture is 7 meters high, is covered with ceramic and will be illuminated at night with colored lights LED. The Pop Rooster will be exposed for three months, from January 2015.
The Cock of Barcelos is an icon of Portuguese culture. Legend has it that in the sixteenth century, a citizen was accused of committing a crime in the medieval town of Barcelos. When convicted, he noticed a roast chicken served on a platter, on a table, and fired:. “So he was innocent as certain is that cock crow when hang me not guilty”
