The Brigade Inspection of Foodstuffs Food Directorate-General identified the presence of the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes in cheese produced by the establishment ‘Cheese Producers Cooperative of Beira Baixa’ of Idanha-a-Nova.
The harvest for analysis was performed on December 16, 2015 and focused on two batches of cheese properly identified. The results were announced on 30 December, with the Power of the Directorate-General authorities and Veterinary (SAGD) ordered the “immediate withdrawal” of the market of contaminated products and the seizure of the remaining cheese from the same batch, which was still in establishment. “
the SAGD also stated in the statement issued at the end of Tuesday afternoon have a new sampling was carried out, focusing on every batch of products stored on the property (52) which resulted in 39 samples positive to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes .
Given the seriousness of the situation encountered, the SAGD determined, on January 15, the “suspension of activity and the withdrawal of all market products from that establishment. ” All lots of cheese (29 tons, including the products withdrawn from the market and those who were in storage) were sent for destruction.
This bacterium is associated with cases of septicemia and meningitis.
