Culture contributes to 2.7 million a year – Correio da Manhã

culture sector employs close to 90,000 people.

For the first time in Portugal drew up a Satellite Culture Account, aiming to identify the contribution of this area to national wealth . These figures refer to the period of 2010-2012 and the project resulted from a partnership between the INE (National Statistics Institute) and GEPAC (Office of Strategy, Planning and Cultural Assessment). The INE intends to do two updates in two years.

In a statement released by the INE, this Thursday, it is stated that “the economic activities related to culture were developed by about 66 000 institutions, representing on average 1.7% of Gross Value Added 2% of total employment and 2.2% of total remuneration. ”

The culture contributed about 2.7 million per year between 2010 and 2012, and despite the sector’s decline, along with the economy, it was found that employment exceeded “registered, for example, in the real estate or the telecommunications industry, “said Cristina Ramos, Director of S Satellite Accounts ervice in INE. About 89,000 people are employed in activities related to the cultural sector and there are close to 66,000 entities representing the sector. The number of exports, increased by about 11%. while imports decreased by almost 10% and eventually balance the national external balance. Still Jorge Barreto Xavier, Secretary of State for Culture, believes that this is an industry that “is still deficient.”

In addition to Portugal, only four countries have a Satellite Account Culture: Finland, Poland and the Czech Republic. As evidenced Barreto Xavier, “alongside Finland is the most current and the best of the five in the European Union.”

To Cristina Ramos, this is “just one piece of this huge puzze that it is culture “. But the Secretary of State for Culture ensures that “culture is more important for human development that science or technology.”
