Data from the National Statistics Institute on the first sector of the Satellite Account show that between 2010 and 2012, culture contributed annually EUR 2.7 billion to the economy and accounted for 2% of employment.
The cultural sector accounts for about 2% of total employment in Portugal and about 1.7% of gross value added, with a contribution average of 2.7 billion euros per year, surpassing branches as the Agriculture and Food Industries. The data was released this Thursday, August 27, the first report of the Culture Satellite Account, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Among the numbers stand out two types of interpretations. Taking into account the total number of activities recorded in Portugal, the performing arts account for about one third of the cultural offer, with more than 20,000 institutions, a commanding presence. However, if we look at the Gross Value Added ( gross value of production less the production process costs) and data on employment is the Books sector and publications that have more weight in the national economy.
The statistical analysis of the weight of the cultural sector in the Portuguese economy is based on data available between 2010 and 2012, during which the Portuguese economy suffered a contraction that was reflected naturally in culture of numbers.
Cristina Ramos, director of Auditors Satellite Service and the National Accounts Qualities Assessment, warned precisely to this issue. “ These data can not be separated from the analysis of the economy. The period under review was treated in a period with a strong impact on culture, a sector that has its more focused activities to the domestic market. Of course, with a contraction in domestic demand there was a reflection on consumption and generated activity to the economy. “
The report studied the activities of around 66,000 entities and aims to respond to requests from various entities, including the Secretariat of State for Culture, represented by Secretary of State Jorge Barreto Xavier in the presentation of the Satellite Account, to create a document that allows an assessment of the economic dimension of the sector. Cristina Ramos further explained that the methodology used in the creation of this report focused on European methodological references, since one of the study’s objectives is to allow and ensure comparability internationally.
