Buraka Som Sistema came to an end, after ten years of career that revolutionized the music scene in Portugal and brought the sound of the suburbs of Lisbon from the four corners of the world.
When emerged in 2006 the public surprised by the aggressive and different sound played, but Buraka Som Sistema were more than music and were willing to risk everything to get the audience to feel the beat and, above all, to identify with what they wanted to do.
Buraka Som Sistema is synonymous with house music, electronic, African, but also tribal, disconcerted and sometimes even invented. It is a mixture of sounds and unique hits. Regardless of what may come “tomorrow”, it is certain that the group born in the suburbs of Lisbon has left its own mark on the world music history.
In 2006, Riot, Branko, Kalaf and Conductor created 1 -Uik project, a project with hip-hop sounds that later spurred the creation of Buraka Som Sistema. It was the night clubs of Lisbon, which gave way to the trials of the four friends. First Market Club, then the Lux nightclub and later the Casa da Música in Porto. Indeed, it was on the stage of invicta that Kalaf clarified, the microphone, were doing. “This is the sound the outskirts of Lisbon. This is the sound of Reboleira, Amadora, the Buraca!” , and so were born the Buraka Som Sistema.
But Buraka sound System were not always a successful band, during the ten years they were together, the group released five albums and had some changes.
With the first EP, the themes “Yah!” and “Wawaba” cheered the country nights and gradually all social and age groups surrendered to the different pace of this Lisbon band. Riot considered, in statements to the TVI24 , the band played an important role in the inclusion of music in the suburbs of commercial dance tracks. “We were part of a movement that did good work” to break some prejudices and social stigmas that somehow conditioned the music and art to social or economic strata.
this movement includes people from the world’s poorest to the richest social classes, and that’s what we like” , said Riot.
In 2008, Pongo Love, whose real name is Engracia Silva, was the dancer who “shook” everything and everyone in the band shows and even sang some songs. In the same year comes Blaya to replace Pongo Love who was underage at the time and could not be absent from the country for concerts. Critics and fans of the band felt that with the replacement of the dancer could be the end, but Blaya realized the job and in 2016 continues to be the face and the female voice of Buraka Som Sistema.
Riot (Rui Pite) is assumed as the most sentimental of the band, but admits that the longing of Buraka Som Sistema will not nostalgic or sad.
were very good times. It is experience and a feeling that you drank from multiple sources and you know other styles of other Buraka that exist throughout the world and that’s what we want to transpire in this new phase “ , said in an interview with TVI24 .
of the 10 years of the band, the musician admitted not isolate one but has its top 3. When went to Japan in 2009, was proved power of music they made. “It symbolizes almost a return to the world of our music and see there hundreds of Japanese to enjoy our sound was a open eyes ” confessed Riot. After the presence in Coachella, in the United States that same year, was “very important” because they did not know how people who did not know them, and they were in what is considered one of the biggest music festivals and art in the world, would react to the beat of Buraka. “It was a wonderful afternoon,” he said. Finally, Riot elects Belgium as a country where there are more fans outside of Portugal. “It’s funny to see them try to sing not only Portuguese but also slang Angola”.

In the late 2000s, the Sintra Line group had internationalized. Beats african house and progressive kuduro suburbs did hear the four corners of the world. Many could not understand what to sing, but no one could remain indifferent to the rhythm.
I realized the dimension that this could be to mess with dance and a language closer to the people living in Lisbon, because almost no one grew up in the city center. People grew up in the suburbs and suddenly, it seems that we could speak the same language as the generation that was in front of us, and it made perfect sense “ , explained Branko (João Barbosa) to TVI24 .
Kalaf admitted that over all these years have made some mistakes and even said sorry for not having devoted more time to Lisbon. “But at least we tried that music came to the public without filters,” said TVI24 .
