It was another concert by Buraka Som Sistema. Like so many others over ten years, celebrative, physical and frantic, with thousands of people dancing or choreographing hands in the air while on stage the group members propose a music and hedonistic attitude, mixed-race, healthily malicious.
that’s it. When it happens to a concert of Buraka know to what goes. There are no mistakes. And Friday night, in that sense, it was like so many others: sweaty and festive. And yet, it could not be a concert, because it was the last before a break for an indefinite period which could mean the definitive end – and that’s what the group bet this time – or not. The future will tell.
So there was an emotional component to surround the occasion. And also a symbolic factor: in the last decade Buraka represented the outbreak of a new generation that was able to create new imaginary and experiences in the context of Portugal postcolonial while took the name of the country, and particularly Lisbon, to the world. On the night of Friday, Lisbon, Greater Lisbon, Amadora to Chiado, Barreiro to Campo de Ourique, from Buraca to Lapa, thanked them inspiration.
On stage, the effectiveness ever . Joao Barbosa (Branko) launches the frantic pace in programming and keyboards, Rui Pite (DJ Riot) grabs him on drums and Kalaf Epalanga, Andro Carvalho (Conductor) and Blaya try to return it to the public in the form of incitements and provocations, a performative attitude where sound, words and bodies unite before thousands of esfusiantes people in a restless tune, dancing syncretism of genres not always stabilized in the collective memory as kuduro, tarraxo, semba, baile funk, dubstep, house and other nomenclatures resulted in cathartic wave that swept the gardens of the Tower of Belem.
at many Kalaf asked where was the crowd Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Brazil or São Tomé, the same as before had asked who was there Line Cascais, Amadora or downtown Lisbon. And all requests existed answers. And that’s it. Without romanticizing too, Buraka, without wanting to be identity badge of anything, had this effect of bringing together people from many different backgrounds, colors and experiences around you, as rarely glimpsed in Portugal, thus also boosting processes of social transformation.
Moreover repeated frames long tested. They took the audience to the ground for this rise then in delight, as if to reach the sky. They invited dozens of girls to invade the stage. They put men with girls piggyback. They made the public take the t-shirts to be esvoaçadas in the air. And they go on stage a series of kuduro dancers.
And to all requests the public responded as he listened topics such as Hangover (Bababa) Get stoopid , We stay all night , Sound of kuduro , Wawaba , Vuvuzela , Luanda -Lisbon , Here to you , General or Kalemba (Wegue Wegue), with the voice and presence of Pongo Love, in about two hours of concert.
before they hit the encore theme Eskeleto , Kalaf announced that Globaile festival would take place annually and before launching the Yah! their first single, raised the small market club where it all began. At the time were sessions for 100 people. There were about 15 thousand. And more than that, in ten years, they managed to express a singular artistic angle while embodied many of the transformations of contemporary Portugal, knocking psychic barriers – getting your music to position itself in the global space – social and racial through heat, sweat and debauchery of his music.
Before they had acted Peruvian Dengue Dengue Dengue, south African Batuk, the Brazilian MC Bin Laden or the Portuguese Kking Kong and Dotorado Pro. All these names are in business because ten years ago started a music validation process proscribed by prejudice in different metropolises in the world. The success of Buraka, alongside other global actors such as M.I.A. or Diplo, to reclaim these sonorities of social limbo where they were. In the coming years, the Globaile festival, will try to reflect this reality.
But as is evident yesterday no one paid much attention to that. The great event was the farewell of Buraka. In the end, they made a point to thank the Lisbon intense ten years of life. Thank you, us.
