Following the September 9, 1836 Revolution, Passos Manuel, a lawyer and parliamentarian, would take over two years after the direction of the Government – the September 10, 1838 was also promulgated the 1st Portuguese Constitution – and one of the measures taken immediately was in charge, by royal decree, the writer and politician Almeida Garrett ‘think the Portuguese theater in global terms “and incumbi it to present,” without further loss of time, a plan for the foundation and organization of a national theater, which ‘being a school of good taste, contributed to civilization and moral improvement of the Portuguese nation. ”
Less than eight years later, April 13, 1846, opened the doors D. Maria II National Theatre, opened during the official celebrations of the 27th Queen’s birthday of D. Maria II (1819-1853).
This Wednesday, the theater, that despite 170 years of life does not age, celebrated the anniversary with a vast cultural program, beginning with the opening of the exhibition Theatre in Poster, through the premiere of the Impromptu of Versailles, Molière, in the Garrett Room, at 21 hours, the highest point of the celebrations and had a full house, or 453 people, not forgetting the release of two books, one of which the last issue of the magazine pier, dedicated to the Theatre Dona Maria II.
Then close the celebrations, the renovated lobby Coffee Garrett became, from 23 hours, a dance floor.
12 years to clean face burnt
In 1964, the National Theatre D. Maria II has been a brutal fire that only spared the walls and external input. The building we know today and respects the original neoclassic style has been entirely rebuilt and only in 1978 opened the doors. Who continue with open arms.
