The information available in the National Civil Protection Authority page (ANPC), at about 7:30 a.m., refers to the existence of 27 fires across the country that are opposed by 928 operational and 306 terrestrial means, and Guarda and Castelo Branco districts with more situations (four each district).
The fire of S. Pedro do Sul is one large appointed by ANPC, mobilizes 833 operational supported by 257 terrestrial means and has three active fronts.
The fire broke out on the afternoon of August 8, in Arouca municipality, Aveiro district, but moved to the neighboring municipality of S. Pedro do Sul, which has destroyed vast area of bush and forest, and led to removal of inhabitants of several villages.
At the end of Sunday night, the Mayor of S. Pedro do Sul, Vitor Figueiredo, he said the situation was under control, which meant that there was reacendimentos.
Weather conditions may be less adverse today and the expectation remained relatively the wind, but the Institute of Marine and Atmosphere (IPMA) still points to a very high fire risk in this area.
The president of the City of S. Pedro do Sul House said late in the evening that “the county is 250 square kilometers. The area that is burned is very large, probably equivalent to a third or a quarter” of its total.
The Prime Minister, António Costa, visit today the area hit by the fire, and in the morning moves the headquarters of the Volunteer Fire Department of Arouca and meets with mayors of Aveiro district municipalities affected by the fires, and afternoon goes to the Peneda Geres National Park.
