In an unprecedented decision, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced that from next summer there will be a standardization of the album release date around the world.
The measure is intended to avoid the frustration of fans around the world who have to wait several days for the release of an album that has been released in other countries. The debate that has been done in recent months culminated in this IFIP position: “from the summer of 2015, new albums and’singles` will go out on Friday at 00:01 pm local time” .
The current practice is that the most recent discs are released on Monday of Europe on Tuesday, while in the United States and Australia is happens on Friday.
The statement released by IFPI notes that that “day of departure currently vary from one country to another, causing frustration among consumers when fans living in other countries can have access to new albums before” . The agency also justified the measure in order to reduce piracy:. “In addition to helping music lovers, this harmonization will benefit artists who want to use the’media` to promote their music”
Martin Moore, president of the federation, in a statement underlines the importance of the measure for the sector: “The fans are now living in a digital world. They want the music as soon as it is available’on-line` not when it’s ready to go in your country “.
