Eduardo Souto de Moura: Continuities runs through the work of the Portuguese architect models and short videos
Eduardo Souto de Moura shook each ladder of Braga Municipal Stadium (Estadio da Pedreira) before this open the gates of Euro 2004. the architect, now 63, remembered the fall from a balcony at the stadium José Alvalade that killed two people in 1995. “There were two days when I did not sleep.” Until “a statistic:.. Will die five people in the stadium I think I just killed two, a truck that fell is unpleasant kind know that there were people who died to materialize a risk that I did not think.?”
from where we sit to hear this story see the model of the stadium. As the hydroelectric plant Tua dam (under construction), the Burgo Tower or a house in Moledo. The exhibition Eduardo Souto de Moura: Continuities, curated by António Sérgio Koch and Andrew France Campos, through the work of the architect, Pritzker Prize winner in 2011, seven works
In the Garage South Centre. cultural de Belém, Lisbon, we see the models and behind the buildings in small films – episodes as lightly animated pictures – Japanese Takashi Sugimoto. And yet heard an interview where Souto de Moura speak of his works, of which reads, what matters in its architecture. At one point, spear “. I can not be metaphysical if not master the physical”
“? Know Joseph Beuys” he asks. One day the German artist made an exhibition in a New York gallery that consisted simply in Beuys himself closed with “a fierce coyote, a bat, a blanket, and many newspapers.” In the end, account Souto de Moura, “he is seen saying goodbye. And the coyote gives you the paw.” This is how the architect works: the space is “a wild animal”. “I get to a monastery in ruins and say: How am I going to do here a hotel [will do so in the Alcobaça Monastery] This coyote will not be easy …” But tames it
<. p> The House of Stories Paula Rego is also in this show. And thus was born: “I am a painter, my name is Paula Rego I would love to do a museum that is not quite a museum And like you were the architect…” A letter. After they met. She took it to the Tate Britain in London, it opened a purple room full of Bacon’s paintings in orange and said. “What I liked was this” It was amazing and played Souto de Moura, “seemed the Holy Week in Braga.”
The painter liked the final building. Wrote him a “little note”: “I liked it, it is very Vermelhinho.” Incidentally, the “Little Red” will already leaving because Souto Moura was wrong to make the stairs and not to unbalance the budget, we had to do without something. The layer that did not quite cover the red color of the house paid the error. The color is no longer as it was. And now? “And now the stairs is fine,” responds with laughter.
What was the most difficult to tame coyote? The architect asks permission to get up and prowl the models. It was the Stadium. “It’s a barbarity. Twenty million tons of rock! I’m sorry, but in rational terms does not make much sense.” He, who knew nothing about football – and, remember, so maybe have seen as something “made for television, [where] players are actors.” – Did a stadium that is a colossal stage
There is a lot to tell. “To keep the accounting office, I have to work out there. To tell the truth, here [in Portugal] is lost money.” Even if it is here that the architect enjoys working. Here: where can ask to call you when building a wall for him, only then, decide if that bathroom or have no windows. He decided he would. And this house lives Álvaro Siza Vieira. “Have you seen what was the world’s best architect windowless, closed in the dark, to insult me. [The building] became uglier, but it pays off brutally. Beauty is not metaphysics, is not a pure entity, is made clashes, antagonisms. “
in Souto Moura, those videos and those models now in Lisbon, there is always, and still another story to tell.
